Disaster
« on: October 22, 2015, 03:55:43 PM »
I ran in to a huge problem on my rebuild. The mellions oil pump I got from Napa was the wrong one. I found out the hard way. I got my motor back from the engine rebuilder. When I tried to start the motor it cranked and then I noticed my rotor had stopped spinning. No movement at all. Pulled the motor back out and took it to the shop. After a day of tearing it back apart it turns out two teeth were snaped off the cam gear. We examined the oil punps closely and turns out my new oil pump was 1/8" longer. Could the oil pump possibly have been for a f head engine? I am so disappointed. I missed my deadline. This guy failed.

He is making it right. I am just going back to the original oil pump. I had a extra cam. Hopefully early next week I will get it back. The oil pump that came from Napa looks almost identical. Lesson learned the hard way. For now on I'm going to examine parts very closely and compare to the old parts before I use them.

I'm reading about the oil pumps on Walcks and I think that I got a oil pump for a earlier chain timed engine. Walcks says they are not interchangeable with a hear to gear engine.

There have been problems with the new Melling oil pumps. There are gaskets that fit between the body and end plate of different thicknesses. The pump will turn in your hand, but when you mount it into the block, tighten the bolts, it locks up the pump, or turns very stiff, galls and then locks up which then breaks the teeth. Sorry you had it happen. John

Good to hear that he will make it right....

From what I've read here and on the 2a forum you are not alone when it comes to oil pump problems......that does not make it any easier to take though...

The lube pump gear on the camshaft is different on the chain drive and gear drive. You can't put a chain drive pump in a gear drive camed engine or vice versa. I think the only difference between the two lube pumps is the gear on the end of the pump.

There has been a lot of discussion about the reproduction pumps being to tight. The solution is to completely disassemble a replacement pump and measure all the parts to see if they are the same as the specs in the Willys manuals.

When I rebuilt my engine people were having a lot of trouble with all the repo lube pumps and almost everyone was checking and using their old pump. I did the same, I tore it apart and measured everything and made a gasket the right thickness to get the end play of the gears to specs.
