Drivetrain mounts

I'm replacing my old cracked engine, transmission and TC mounts.  Seems like it would be pretty straightforward, but anything in particular I should know before launch?  Assuming I just support things on a floor jack and only raise enough to get the mounts in and out...anything else?  Thank you!

Also, how much to tighten up?  Couldn't find torque spec in the service manual.  Maybe just crank down???

That's pretty much it Tom.  Easy breezy. 

It will help to lower (but not remove) the tranny/TC crossmember, then raise the drive train.  The mount below the tranny has studs going up and down.  You'll appreciate the extra clearance.

The tcase mount is kind of a pain to replace. There is one steel cup that is pressed into one that is welded to the crossmember.

Thanks!  Can't tell for sure if that TC mount is welded or not - looks like just a  big bolt holds mine.

One more question, any problem supporting the trans/TC at the bell housing or would you just try to support it at the TC?  I'm not seeing a really good place to put my jack other than the lower edge of the TC pan.  Don't want to make matters worse.

The lower "cup" at the TC mount is part of the crossmember.  The rubber donut has a steel base that fits in the crossmember cup.  These can become stuck together, which sometimes prompts folks to try and pry the lower cup off the crossmember.

With the front engine mounts in place, a good place to jack the drive train is at the very back of the oil pan...if you have the style with the skid plate.  I use a 2x6, between the jack and pan, that's about the same length as the width of the pan.  If you have nice paint under there, add a towel for a scratch free lift. 8-)

Yes I am.  I'm chasing a rear main leak that is driving me crazy.  I've replaced it twice in the last week, ( no easy chore), but I'm not improving on my oil puddle size. I believe I'll be leaving a mark in SD. :-[

Going to try...watching the weather though.  I'd be lying if I said I wanted to spend a week jeeping in the rain!  Good luck on that leak, Tim.  Is that the same that you were dealing with at Mike's?

Yes, it is.  I have leaked at the joint from the start, but I damaged the seal while looking for my knock and made it worse.  I've replaced the front Tranny bearing (sealed bearing), and intended to take care of this leak too.  I'm out of time, so I'm going to have to throw in the towel...at least for now.

Tim, bring the towel.  ;D. They don't call me oilleaker for nothing you know. You'll feel right at home. As for rain, only the man upstairs knows that. Could be absolutely perfect. Did you and Tom see that there is a detour around Lusk when headed North on Hwy 85? You turn and go North at Manville, thru Lance Creek and back to  85 North. The rains have washed out a bridge on 85. John

10-4 on the detour, John.  I'm thinking the Guernsey exit off of I25, then north on 270 just as advertised.  Maybe Tim and I can manage to form a convoy!  Made reservations at the IHI today.  The long- range weather forecast looks great for that week.  Really looking forward to seeing this part of the country up close and personal!
