Transmission whine...
« on: July 15, 2014, 11:11:25 PM »
I know, no whining!

But, this noise bugs me. It only happens at certain speeds and this is the worst.....I only noticed it after installing the OD, but I really didn't drive it that much before installing the OD

I think I'm going to remove the OD and then see what happens..

Anyone have a similar noise?

Mine whine when in OD, but not that bad. Yours sounds like a jet engine!

It's a gear whine,...I replaced the 2nd gear slider with new when it was rebuilt, and the output gear that came with the OD is of course new.....I keep hoping it will wear-in a little and go away...it's only got 400 miles on it ...maybe a little more patience....or a little sawdust?

The CJ-5 transmission is nearly silent, and it's never been rebuilt.....

Mine has a similar whine, also since I installed the OD. More noticeable in OD but still present when in DD. I have put around 500 miles on it since installing the OD with no noticeable difference in the whine.

Mine makes pretty much the same sound in DD or OD, there may be a small difference in volume between the two .....it is louder at certain speeds.....

I probably need to remove the OD and see if the sound goes away.....

So I took the OD off yesterday....came off easily, but it's only been there for 300 miles or so...

The noise is still there but a little quieter....

I'm beginning to suspect the TC intermediate shaft, but I'm not sure why...wishful thinking maybe?....the bearings and shaft are all new but the gear bore may be worn...

The whine won't hurt anything but your mind. It's hard to find an old type tranny/transfer case that does not whine some. It's just the nature of the beast. Gears wear and they whine. Bearings wear and they roar or rumble. Live with the gear whine, replace bearings for the roar or rumble.

Thanks Carl,

You are right...I could change parts until I'm blue in the face and still not eliminate the noise.......driving with the windshield down solves the problem, nothing but the roar of wind in my ears!

But my CJ-5 is so quiet...you can't even hear it....guess I'll need to wait until I have 50,000 miles on the 3a and then it'll quiet down....

I just got back from running an errand across town and I think the transmission is considerably quieter...just sounds like an old transmission now....

Guess I'll send the OD back to Herm and see what he has to say....

1955.
Keep us posted on what Herm says, I'm serious about an Overdrive for 3X. but this has me a little worried.  I rode with Lee one day, he has a 2A and lurks here from time to time, boy that was really quite and smooth.  So now I'm needing more info as I don't want a whiner in my garage.

I'll ship it back to him next week....

I suspect it has more to do with my transmission than Herm's OD but as long as I have it out I may as well have him look it over...

I've been talking with Herm and we are going to send the barrel gear assembly back to Advance Adapters and have them check it out...the teeth are clearly worn/scarred beyond what you'd expect for 300 miles of use... ..The intermediate gear in the TC with which the barrel gear meshes looks fine....

I'll update in a couple weeks.....

So the latest is that I've taken the tower off the transmission, inspected everything, gaps etc....I see no problems.

Herm had a good used set of TC gears so I'm going to try that next

I took it for a drive with the sheet metal cover off...I used the stethoscope and the noise is not in the front of the transmission..putting the probe through the PTO shift hole against the OD yields the most noise...

I took another video....wait for it...
