What is the application for the grill in the second 2 pics. The first 2 pics are the grill that came on my 3A. It had a F-head installed and as a result the grill got hacked. I'm hoping the grill in the second 2 pics will work as a replacement.

Remind us...what year is your jeep?

Early 3a's had bottom mount radiators, and later they went to the front mount, but I don't have specific vin's for the change...

Edit: I looked in Bob's book and the change occurred for the 1950 model year, production started in November of 1949..


Mine is a 51 with a front mount, here is the grill:

The first grill looks like a typical late 3A grill.� It is the later design that accepts the side mount radiator.� The early 3A grill does not have the mounting holes on the inner flanges.

It actually looks to be in decent condition.� Maybe I'm not seeing the damage.�

The second grill is interesting.� The park lights have been cut out.� Probably to accommodate an after market set of turn signals.� That is somewhat typical.�

What is interesting is the lower inner flange.� I haven't seen that before.� It looks factory, so I may have to re-assess what I thought I knew about grills.

Even though the park lights have been cut out, it may still work with the original style park bezels and lenses.

There were 3 different CJ-3A grills. The first was for the bottom mount radiator. The second was for the side mount radiator. The third was also for the side mount radiator but had the bottom portion of the "shroud" included.

I knew Bob would know.� Curious...Did they eliminate the center mounting bolt?� Or is there a hole in the shroud for access?

The center bolt remains.

Thank you gentlemen. My Jeep is a 1950 model. The second grill pictured is in much better shape than the other.

Tim if someone cut the parking lights out of this grill they did the best job I have seen. I swear it looks like that's the way it was made. Professional to the point that I can't tell.

I'm going to try and use the second grill pictured.

I am finding that I am accumulating enough parts that when I finish this one I'll probably have everything I need to do another.

The cut outs do look clean.� The give away is they are offset from the original bezel mounting holes.�

I'm fairly confident those large holes were not factory, but�I could be wrong.� I hadn't seen the bottom shroud design, until yours, either.

Only a guess, but perhaps a PO had access to a hydraulic punch ??

A Greenlee punch that I use as an electrical contractor could make a nice hole like that and a hole saw could also but you would have to have a backer block to get the pilot hole going right. Not done freehand for sure.

I use a Greenlee punch everyday.  Yes, I agree that it could do it but, when you look very closely the holes look identically offset.  It is highly improbable that those are aftermarket punches.  Could it be an aftermarket grill?? Made in the 60's?

My 2a grill has little shelves for the parking lights that mount inside. Any evidence of something like that being removed?
