I have been driving my '52 3A I bought this spring all summer back and forth to work and around town. I am loving it and am making a list of things that I want to attend to this winter.
Something has come up however that I think I need to address before I drive it much more.
I have a carter WO carb that I was told was rebuilt just before I got it. It runs very nice, idles smoothly and no bogging or power problems. However I have been noticing the distinctive smell of gasoline. I have also noticed that the carb has slowly developed the look of fuel residue on the outside. When I take the air horn off the top of the carb ( it still has the original oil bath air cleaner which is clean) I can hear a spitting or small popping sound coming from inside the carb and can see fuel dripping down on top of the throttle plate. It still seems to run well, though not as nicely as when I put the horn back on. When I shut it down I can see fuel dripping out of the carb around the engine side of the throttle shaft. It has also developed a propensity to flood very easily when I start it, particularily when the engine is warm. I hold the accelerator to the floor and after cranking a few seconds it belches smoke and coughs to life and then clears and runs fine. (kind of like me in the morning)
I am pretty sure the carb needs a rebuild or at least a bushing put in for the throttle shaft. What does not seem right to me is that enough fuel would pool in the bottom of the throttle body to drip out of the carb.
