Front Drum removal

I am replacing the shoes on my '49 and I am unable to remove the passenger front Drum. I've tried soaking with PB Blaster for the last two days and have applied heat. I've even used a 20 pound slide hammer but it won't budge.

I am not familiar with what type of Puller I'll need to get or if I'll need to remove the Hub when using one?
These drums and shoes appear to have been changed from the originals as well as the Hubs. they are marked FreeLock and I can't find any info. on them.
Here is a picture of the left front. Any help in getting the right front hub off would be greatly appreciated!

Are you asking about the drum or the hub? In the photo the drum is missing but the hub is still there.

To remove the wheel hub, you will have to remove hubs lock first...

Show us a picture of the other drum/hub, the one you can't remove.

The drivers side that you have pictured above is a later type two piece hub/drum, so it's been changed from the original..

If the passenger side is a one-piece hub/drum the removal will require taking the lock-out hub off and removing the inner hub nuts...

And now i just noticed that your brake shoe return springs are different...you may have a completely different axle assembly.....is it a Dana 25?

Are the drums 9" or 11" ?

The picture is of the front drivers side. The stuck drum is on the front passenger side. The drums are 10".
I am attempting to get the front passenger sides drum removed. The other 3 drums all came off easily.

I'll snap some photos of the stuck drum when I get home. It is exactly the same as drivers side drum that came off.

I'm not sure which axle assembly I have. Will it be stamped somewhere?

The wheel studs are sometimes pressed into the drum as well. I have a set of 11" drums that are like that. You'll be better off pulling the hub apart and do it the old fashioned way. Then take the hub/drum to a press and pop it apart. Then drill the holes out in the drum. You may need new studs after pressing it apart.

Those hubs are a knock-off of the selectro hubs. Sears and Allstate made similar looking hubs. I have selectros on my trail jeep. They are a rugged hub.

To find out what axle you have, check to see where the breather is located. A Dana 25 will be on the diff cover and a Dana 27 has it on the housing, near the top.

There should be a "25" cast into the differential housing, on the aft passenger side between the pinion yoke and the axle tube...usually well hidden in road grime...I'm trying to find a picture....

The number of splines on the axle shaft will help identify it when you take the lock-out hub off...it ought to have ten splines

3 pullers later I got it off. Took a 12 ton hydraulic to do it and the drum is toast. The wheel studs were pressed into the drum!
Will pick up two new front hubs in the morning.

That is the way the older hubs/drums were done....normally the hub/drum comes off as a single unit..

I figured that the other 3 came off so easily that this one would have too. I'll open the lug holes a bit so this doesn't happen again.

The drums are actually 10" all the way around. Maybe form an early 70's CJ? That's what parts the NAPA guy and I matched up to the old ones.

I bought new wheel cylinders online and they of course they are wrong. I need the style that have the 45 degree offset for the brake line. The ones I ordered do not.
It appears they are all 3/4" cylinders but I ordered 1" for the front and 3/4" for the rear. I do see proportioning valves in the line so I'm hoping the 1" won't be a problem.

I'm still looking for the casting marks on the differentials. Will both the front and rear have them?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance on vehicles. I didn't start toying with them until my mid 30's and am learning as I go.

The 10" drums were used on '66-71 CJ5s with the v6. I have them on my '53 and they are awesome with a dual MC conversion. Stops on a dime.
