Axle seal replacement
« on: July 10, 2013, 12:58:37 PM »
How do you pull the axle seals, and the pinion seal.

The manual shows a special tool for pulling the pinion seal--surely there's another way, though?

I have a hook/lever type seal puller.  Is it just a question of applying enough force now?  Or there something else I have do first?

Thanks,

-Paul

I used one of those hook/lever seal pullers...It took some force...make sure you are hooked on the seal itself and not hooked on the lip behind the seal

This is how mine looked...I guess I didn't get a picture with the seal removed...

I used a pry bar and do it carefully.

My buddy did make 4 holes (drill it) in it and used big bolt to removing it just by bolting the bolt gently evently in each hole.

Thanks!  Just needed to know I wasn't missing something...

I picked up this set this morning:

The big one worked great on the axle ends.  A couple hits with a hammer, and the seals popped right out.  I tried using the small one on the pinion, but it was too flexible--the hammer just bounced off it.  Luckily, I was just able to get the tip of the big one in between the pinion shaft threads and the seal, and then a couple hits and that seal popped out, too.

There's no seal in the axle tube ends on the front, is there?

Just a bushing in the axle tubes in front...seal is in the hub...The hub/drum seal keeps the wheel bearing grease from fouling the brake linings...

Those are pretty substantial pullers!  I think I need a set!
