A rebuild is what I'm thinking also. I can pull it and then maybe have a machine shop evaluate it and go from there. It shows 63 thousand and some change on the speedo...about a thousand miles a year... I do not know if it works. Drive shafts are off as it was flat-towed from Iowa to here in 2011....no way to check the speedo other than maybe taking the cable off the transmission and spinning it with a drill or something....maybe I could just flick it with my fingers and see if the needle jumps...

Lots to do. I'm anxious to get started!

Disconnect the cable from the speedometer and you can turn the drive with your fingers. It is easier to do with it out of the dash.

I found a rat's nest in what was left of the tool box...I can't wait to see whats living under the dash and in the heater..all kinds of things might come to life once it gets in the garage and warmed up!

The only remaining part of the speedometer cable was the fitting that screws onto the back of the gauge....but the good news is the needle bounces when the connector at the back is turned...a little stiff, but it turns....

I found a good machine shop through the local chapter of the MVPA and will get the block over there as soon as I get it out.....the machinist is about six weeks out but That will give me time to get the brakes and the other hundred or so things working....or at least cleaned up...

The floors had already been replaced once, with rivets...and they are not pop rivets....so at least two floors have rusted out of this jeep, but, as long as the body remains attached to the frame and neither occupant falls through the floor it will stay that way....

So the engine is nearly ready to pull. Everything is removed from the block with only the bell housing bolts holding it in. Will need to rent a lift.

Here is a picture of both jeeps in the driveway...I'm surprised how much larger the CJ-5 looks....

Pulled the engine today and got it down to the machine shop. Should get the diagnosis in a couple of weeks...

One ear on the intake manifold was broken off..but I have the ear...and the heat riser is frozen and the spring and weight are missing..

One nut was loose on the flywheel..the lock washer was broken and that allowed it to loosen.

The clutch was riding on the rivets...

Now I need to evaluate the transmission....what can I learn just from turning it by hand?? �It turns, it shifts, the transfer case shifts and everything seems OK...The input shaft has a little up and down play, but fore and aft is pretty tight.
