Emergency Brake Drum remains?
« on: August 06, 2012, 08:43:49 PM »
HI...I started to post this on my brake thread but thought I'd have more response with this post.

It is a brake component, I think. I was looking up prices for M/C and noticed under the brake category,

there were Emergency Brake Shoes for sale.

I have the E.B. handle but the cable housing and wire is cut just inside the engine compartment.

Working on removing the M/C I noticed this (in picture) at rear of T.C.

Is this what is left of an Emergency Brake Drum assembly?

If it is, how can it be replaced?

Thanks

:o Wow. There must be an impressive story behind that one. Maybe someone was driving down the road with the parking brake engaged and let it heat up red hot then drove through a puddle and shattered it? I'm going to add that to my list of wow pictures.

Basically to replace it you'll disconnect the rear drive shaft remove the the bold on the rear yoke. Depending on how stuck on the yoke is, you may need to use a puller to get it off.

That black drum is what you are missing most of. The next thing I'd do is remove the 4 bolts holding the backing plate on and remove the entire emergency brake assembly. From there I'd clean it up and figure out what you have left so you can make a shopping list of replacement parts. Luckly for you, most of those are all available.

Here's a good link on all the parts, what it's supposed to look like etc. I know its for a 3b but you get the idea.
http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Tech/BrakeCable.html

I'd also be concerned about that rear yoke. You'll probably want to replace it. How's the transfercase sound? I'd be a little worried about the rear bearing and shaft depending on how the emergency brake was busted up like that.

NoCoWillys....That is what I thought it was....I'm glad that it can be repaired (lucky.)

As far as the T.C., it sounds fine at 45 mph but haven't looked at the inside of it.

I don't think I want to know what happened to it....just be another distraction.

The E. brake on and splash of cold water is believeable enough for me.

When I finish my regular brakes I'll address it next.

Thank you for your reply and link to, "what it should look like."

I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that the T.C. bearing and shaft is unharmed.

So, the jagged metal is what is left of the brake drum?

Yep, exactly. It looks like when it exploded it ripped off the shoes.  The part behind it with the 4 bolts is the backing plate.

That must of been one heck of a noise...probably louder than a backfire!  Seems like it would have

done collateral damage to other components of the under carriage. (haven't noticed any) Hmm...it's a wonder it

didn't come up through the tub floor too.  Well the main thing is everything looks OK.

Ouch!! That photo looks painful. I feel for that Willys. Good that it's in your hands now.

Tim

Here is a photo of the backing plate and components as yours should look.

Tim.....Thanks for the photo...mine is a long ways from looking like that.

I will have to locate all the parts...may take awhile but I just pray nothing else was damaged.

Right now, I'm removing my brake system and replacing it so I can take the CJ for numerous drives to find

out how everything is.

Well, we all have priorities. Mine would match yours. Get it on the road and drive the heck out of it.

I spotted this stuff and thought about you.

 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Willys-Jeep-CJ2a-3a-E-brake-drum-backing-plate-Speed-O-housing-/190712505540?hash=item2c6759e4c4&item=190712505540&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

Even though you're not in a rush, the backing plate with adjuster and the drum would be worth getting here. That is, if the price stays low.

Good luck, and most of all, have fun.

Is it possible to have the drum turned on the EBRAKE to clean up scoring?

It should be possible to do but the scoring shouldn't be any real problem on an emergency brake. After all, it isn't like a wheel brake where you would get pulsing in the pedal.  Mounting  the drum on a brake lathe might be a little tricky but not impossible.

I would think for most of us just wire wheeling or using an abrasive disc on an angle grinder would be plenty...Get the grease and any paint off the working surface and clean the rest so it looks good and you will be fine.

I'm going to challenge the conventional thinking, cause thats what I do.  I'm guessing that E-Brake is a bubba special.  IMHO the e-brake probably needed repair, so bubba took the puller to it but did not know how to get it off.  Broke the drum, so he hammered off the rest of it, removed the e-brake guts casue they were now in the way and decided to live without the e-brake until he sold it.  IMHO just guessing.

But now its in the right hands.  It'll get right.

I almost have to agree with you Gun.

I am fairly new to all of this, but I have never seen that kind of damage done to an E-brake.

I suppose it could have gotten caught on a rock, got cracked and then fell off. Even then, I doubt you would have lost that much of the drum without someone hacking off the pieces.

Everybody...thanks for the reply's....Gunslinger....that is a realistic possibility and in that case the T/C and shaft

bearing should be fine!  Tim...thanks for thinking of me and sending the link to E-bay.

Sounds like me and Tumbleweed will be at least two bidders on it.  Bill...the wire brush approach sounds fine.
