Tank vent?
« on: August 13, 2012, 12:56:59 PM »
Coming from the M38 world, have a question regarding the 3A tank set up.  Was there a vent or vent line off the  fuel tank?  On a M38, they had the fording set up and had a tank vent line run from the tank thru the firewall to the aircleaner along with all the other vents from different assemblies.  Now with my set up, I do not have the fording set up but I'm trying to figure out where I should terminate the vent line.  Right now, it's in limbo just ending in the engine bay.  I'm just curious if the 3A had a system that would give me some ideas.  Or I'm open to suggestions to.
Thanks,
Brett

I don't know about the rest of the CJ3A's but my tank is not vented, the fuel cap is vented.

What does your tank have for connections?  Is it a 3A tank or a M 38 tank?  I would prefer a separately vented tank with a sealed cap, if I had the choice, but like Carl says, the 3A normally has only the cap vent.

I'd go with a M38 style vent line then... or go to avent line in the engine compartment somewhere with a filter on the end of it to keep the bugs out ....I take it your filler neck fits your tub already?

Just be aware, an M38 tank will not fit into a CJ3A without cutting a larger opening for the filler neck.

Brett,  I've got the same set up as you do.  An M38 with m38 tank with a vent in the top.  I don't have a line on it at all.  No need really but I see that it will accept some sort of line.  The cap does not vent.

Sorry if my post wasn't clear to all.
I do have an M38 vehicle, with a M38 tank.  The vent does not have a home in it's normal spot at the air cleaner.  It right now goes from the tank thru a line thru the firewall to nowhere.  I'm just trying to figure the best place to terminate it.  I thought maybe you guys might have an idea and thought that maybe the 3A had some sort of set up, I gather it doesn't.
Again sorry if I didn't clarify anything.
Thanks guys,
Brett

Well, considering your not going to want to go through water above the floor boards I would think the way it is would work.

Like Carl says, just terminate it there in the engine compartment. And like F Bill says, put something on the end to keep the bugs out. Maybe a small breather could be purchased or make one from a piece of tubing filled with chore girl or similar mesh material and attach it to the vent line by use of a reducer.

I would rather have a vented tank than a vented cap!

Thought back to my R/C airplane days and remebered at one time I used a sintered brass clunk/tank filter. I think I might give that a go.

Good idea.  I've used such a filter before and believe it will work well.  The one I used was a water inlet filter for a furnace humidifier.  It was installed on a 1/4 inch water inlet line.  I'm guessing your vent line is that size.
