d18 rear bearing cap
« on: August 05, 2012, 06:51:45 PM »
Well it seems my poor jeep has had a bit of a rough life. Something happened to the rear bearing cap to break part of the flange of one of the bolts that holds it to the case.

Is this now a paper weight or do you think I can get away with using it? Probably just looking for leaks if I do use it? Thoughts? I've seen a few places I can get a replacement, most are omix parts. Would they be OK or should I shell out the 2-3 times the cost for an original spicer?  :-/

Looks like you have over 1/2 of the hole there, my suggestion is to get a grade 8/"AN" washer and trim it to fit the casting before you put the bolt/lock washer back in the case.

"AN" washers are the same thickness for better load under the bolt head when you torque the bolt, it can also be welded using a carbon arc rod in the hole for a temporary plug while welding it using a Stainless Steel welding rod on an aluminum plate, then all you do is knock out the carbon plug and chase the hole with a drill bit.
