It's a Little Quiet Here.
« on: May 09, 2012, 04:48:28 PM »
I don't know if we can liven up the board, or not. I'm sure many of you have your hands full with your Willys as summer approaches. Maybe your Willys is just sitting comfortably waiting for its chance to fly.

Aside from Carl and his frustrating discovery, perhaps we can all post what we are doing, or have recently done with our Willys. Maybe with a few photos.

Just touch base. Oil change? Painting a part? Trail ride? Bought a new pan to catch leaks? :-? Carb adjustment? Anything.

Anything that involves you and your Willys.

I'll start: Check out the "Gatherings" page. A few of us went to the Golden Super Cruise last weekend. (Pictures) I discovered my Willys leaks through the front of the transmission. I am trying to decide whether to tear it open or wait till winter.

I've been climbing over, around and next to my 3A constantly, as I try to find the tools in the shop. I remodeled one of my brother's rentals and took care of improvements to the official Willys Six Acre Campground, thanks to a local arsonist..This was two pretty rough houses, now it will be camper spaces.

Got all the tin picked up, raked up and used a magnet on a bunch of nails, and brought almost $400 in scrap to the local salvage yard. The site is just across the street from the show and shine area and the hillclimb obstacle, and down the road from the official Willys Six Acres Salvage yard. More of the story is over on the 2A page.

And in between, I have been visiting the dentist, losing teeth in preparation for dentures, and working on the road. Poor Willys hasn't seen me much. But each time I get out of the dentist about all I am good for is hanging out on the jeep boards, so you guys have seen me... ;D....

Oh, and today I dragged home something from Germany.....but don't tell anyone I am a Bug owner again. (A 1970, just like I drove in high school cept this one isn't white. or complete...)

Hopefully every one else is doing a wee bit more with their jeep than I have.

EDIT:  I forgot.....I also read YEAR OF THE JEEP this week. First time in years...If you haven't read it as a kid you need to read it now, if you are into storyies about abandoned jeeps and teenage hijinks, with a jeep auction being the climactic ending.

Well I drove the jeep this winter with my friends, put in the heater a couple of months ago and it works great. I have taken another big road trip in Wisconsin and when I got home the clutch linkage snapped. So now I have a new clutch linkage.

This summer we are doing 11 inch disk brakes for the front and going to back to the 50's car show. Gunslinger is coming to, I'm sure he won't be able to stay away.

Other than that its drive drive drive

I'm still sitting around waiting for the bodywork to be completed. The original plan was for it to be done by Christmas 2011. Long story short and two body guys later I'm hoping for the end of this month. In the meantime, I can't do much else but sit and stare at the rolling chassis.

So now would be a perfect time for a game of "WTF is that????". Surprisingly, I haven't had too many left over pieces after my rebuild but I do have this one. Any idea what it is?

Any idea what it is?

I'd say it is part #649270 Bracket, support, radiator to splash apron.

That's a relief. If you showed me it located inside the transmission I would have probably started crying.

If I made a post for every problem I find with my jeep, as I try to get it mechanically decent so that I can start working on the body, this place would be a lot more active.  I would probably be spending half of every day on the computer.  Today I was trying to remove the shackles from the rear springs.  I thought they would go as easy as the front shackles did.  But, no suck luck. I should have known better.  Can't unscrew the upper shackle bolt on one of the springs.  A 2 foot breaker bar won't budge it......yet.  No, it's not a left hand thread.

Going to get real serious with it tomorrow.

See, this is what I'm talking about.  Just touching base...making contact.  I know you're all out there.  You may not think you have anything interesting to add, but say it anyway, because I learned something new today.  My Willys doesn't have that bracket.  And now I'm curious as to why.

Bedrock, I must admit, I was about to post the Left hand thread question...until I saw your last sentence. :D

Bill,  I saw your post about that building over on the 2A page.  Have you decided if it was a curse or a Godsend?

Definite blessing in disguise, I got $400 for the scrap and while I was at the scrap metal place I found an old battery load tester they sold me for $10...... :D  I think it's inductive pickup for the ammeter is a little off but other than that it has a great   adjustable load and voltmeter.. Came with the stand too, was disposed of by a local military base as they thought it was junk....... ;D
Imagine that, a junk Snapon digital  battery tester. Picked up a nice big four wheel wagon too in case I have hay to haul or want to be in the local parades....

I just hadn't planned on cleaning up those houses this particular week... so someone decided to put them on my schedule anyway. And even tho he did me a favor, the arsonist is gonna get prosecuted if I have anything to say about it.....If the wind was blowing the other direction he would have burned out a house with people sleeping in it.

Back to jeeps!!

The bracket was installed with side mounted radiators only (there is no place to put it with bottom mount) and then was eliminated sometime in about mid-late 1951.

Thanks Bob, I was wondering the same thing myself. My '53 was pretty original when I got it and it doesn't have that bracket.

As usual l I've bitten off more than I should.

I'm working on painting the frame, installing brake lines, sealing the transfer case, new engine mounts, etc etc.

Looking for seats.

I'll be picking up a transmission tomorrow. I still need to check the clutch.

Been spending a lot of time and money at Walck's web site.

I have actually started to disassemble my 51 3A and get it ready to paint..

But in the meantime, my buddy/painter bought a paintbooth. The only problem catch was I had to travel to TN with him, help him disassemble it, haul it back to Missouri and reassemble it in his shop.....which we are still working on.

After week 2

It is a nice Devilbiss semi-downdraft booth with an air makup on it. When it is all said and done, my Willy will be the first thing painted in it! My 3A has been on hold for about a month while we get this thing together.
