rear brake questions

Well, pulled the back breaks and orders some parts
I think I need. But I do have a few questions.

Should the axle be coated with grease or should this be clean?
Regarding the back plate it has grease - should that be there as well?

Also when ordering parts I pick up axle seals and gaskets, but don't see how
they would fit- do I need them?

Wipe off all that excess grease from the backing plate and axle shaft. By all means replace the seals while it's apart. When you go to put the hub and drum back on just very lightly grease the axle stub with just a thin coat. Keep track of any shims between the backing plate and axle housing. They will need to be replaced exactly as they were in order to maintain the proper end play in the axle shafts.

Will clean up the old grease -

one last question - for now - should I clean out the grease in the center hole of
the backing plate - and leave it - or regrease �the center hole with new grease.

This is my first break job and I'm a bit nervous and want to do it right.

There should be no grease on the backing plate, clean it all off.

YOUR DRAIN IS CLOGGED, BE SURE TO CLEAN PRIOR TO RE-ASSEMBLY AND ALIGN AXLE SEAL WITH DRAIN HOLE.

MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO REMOVE AND CLEAN YOUR AXLE BREATHER, ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS TO BREATHE.

ALSO, REMOVE THE AXLE BEARING GREASE FITTING AND CLEAN PASSAGE TO AXLE BEARING AND USE NEW FITTING OR ENSURE OLD ONE WILL WORK PROPERLY.

USE ANTI-SEIZE ON ECCENTRICS, WHEEL CYLINDER MOUNTING BOLTS, BLEEDER SCREWS AND ON BRAKE LINE FITTING TO WHEEL CYLINDER AND ON BRAKE LINE UNDER FITTING THAT ATTACHES TO WHEEL CYLINDER. �BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WITH THE ANTI-SEIZE ON THE BLEEDER FITTING AND BRAKE LINE FITTING, YOU DO NOT WANT TO CONTAMINATE THE BRAKE FLUID OR STOP THE FLOW.

ALSO, I SUGGEST DOT3 FLUID.

...I KINDA THINK CLOGGED DRAINS AND AXLES BREATHERS ARE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO OLD JEEP BRAKE PROBLEMS. �CHECK/CLEAN AFTER OFF ROAD USE BEFORE ENCOUNTERING THE PUBLIC. �

Thank you for your input. We cleaned everything and put it
back together. My son and I had a great time - which is what
it's all about. will work on the other side tomorrow - and now we
know what we're doing.

The other side went way faster because we knew what to expect and how things went back together - which is kind of important.
