Oil filter connection
« on: January 01, 2012, 08:55:43 AM »
I'm trying to figure out what to do with the oil filter on my '51 3A. Before I stripped everything off for the rehab, the canister was mounted on the inside of the passenger fender. The hose going in and hose going out were both cut right off, so it was not connected to the motor in any way. I'm thinking it was somehow connected to the original motor. The current motor is a Willys replacement (casting no. 908756). Is there a way to easily connect the oil filter to this motor? All the other 3A pics I can find show the filter canister mounted to the block, not on the fender. Not sure if I can reconnect the filter to the motor while keeping it mounted to the fender or if I need to do something different? Or do I even need an oil filter at all?? It's been running for 20 years without one.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hey Ryan, best to go factory with both the mounting and the filter.....If you stick with the fender mount you will need to make up custom flexible lines to reach the engine... If you do not have something on the top right of your engine in the normal location, you will use shorter and stock length flex lines, and they will not have to endure quite as much flexing. A lot of filters were removed to install plow pumps in that location. The head mounting filter bracket is available aftermarket, hopefully your fender mount filter is a standard one.

The feed line is the front oil passage plug on the drivers side of the block, the outflow from the filter goes to the timing cover. Do not be tempted to use steel lines for this as eventually the vibration will get to them and they will crack. The upper line is feed, the line on the bottom is the drain into the timing cover. If you have a service manual there is a very clear diagram in the Lubrication chapter.

OK that makes more sense now. This Willys did have a plow on it at one time so that's likely the reason the oil filter was moved to the fender. Now I'll figure out how to get it back to its original configuration. Thanks for the info.

The outlet of the oil filter lubricates the cam gears and/or timing chain so you need the oil filter or an oil line running to the spot on the front cover. It has to be restricted as if the filter was in the system so just mount the filter in the right spot and hook it up per original.

The existing filter and bracket was so heavily modified to fit on a fender-mount application that I went ahead and ordered a whole new one (plus hoses and bracket) from Walck's. The current motor was installed roughly 20 years ago and I believe it has run that entire time with no filter. I find it interesting that the timing chain didn't roast off due to lack of lubrication.

I guess it got enough oil splashed on it.

There is an oil spray jet that supplies lube for the cam gears.
