Update: Tub is On! Photos

I am so excited to share. �Got the tub painted. �Filled all the fluids. �Bled the brakes. Installed the tub. Hooked up the basic ignition wiring. �Intstalled the gas tank and fuel lines. Put in some gas and the seat. �Started it up and drove this beast! �Everything worked as it should. �I was almost speechless. �I have never done anything like this before. �I never could have done this without the help I have received at this site!








I still need to paint the fenders, hood, grille, and windshield. �Lot's still to do.

The one picture looks like its parked in the kitchen.  Looks good!  Is that a repo tub?  Im a bit confused with the tool indents but no battery box (M38) and it has drain holes.  What's was the purpose behind the seat frame bracket mod?

The paint job looks great! Nice rig - I had to smile when I saw your paint booth since the one I had looked exactly like it. Heck it worked great and it was cheap. It also kept the oversparay confined. My next portable booth will be exactly the same again.

Okay, where do I start...Thanks for the beers!! �And thanks for the kind words. �I just don't have anyone around me to share this stuff with. �I have shown my progress to neighbors and friends, but they just don't get it. �The time and effort just doesn't make sense to some. �I know you all know what I mean. �It's a jeep thing.

Not the kitchen. I'd put it in there if I could get away with it. �Took the old kitchen cabinets and mounted them in the garage. �

I thought I'd get a giggle or two out of the paint booth shot. �I never painted a vehicle before. �(I will ad that I screwed it up 3 times before I thought it was acceptable.)

Can barely find flat fenders here, much less a military version. �So... I am dressing this up like an M38. �At least as much as I can with the money I have to spend. �This is the original tub. I did buy a new hood. �I cut out the rust and welded the crap out of this thing. �I have piles of old rusty metal. �I like the tool indents in an M38, so I cut, built, and welded them in. �I also like the CJ drain holes. �If nothing else, it makes guys like you ask what the heck I'm doing to this poor thing. �The seat bracket modification had to happen as I discovered I have 2A seats in a 3A tub. �Extra support was needed. �The seat frames didn't reach the original brackets. �And one of them is missing anyway. �

The brakes are the original 9" set. �The wheels are early 1950s 15". �Probably from a Jeep truck . �The set of 5 match, so I just went with them. �I like the way the 7.00 tires look on the 15" wheels. �Looks kind of mean. �

Again, Thank you for the support and the numorous times you have all helped me. �And thanks in advance for the future issues I will have, and you will help solve. �

  I agree with you on the 700 X 15 tires and wheels.  On my 1949 CJ-3A they were an available option and I'm pleased to have them.

When I originally inherited my 53 Willys after my dad passed, my intentions were to "just get it running again".  In 1982 my dad scored an unmolested CJ-3A with only 28,000 on the odo. Body has minimal rust because the original owner let several grandkids paint it as they saw fit... with paint brushes !!  He ran it as it was for a few years before we decided to make a M38 clone, like so many others.

Whenever I see these frame off resto's, I can't help but mutter "I should do that !"

I think my wife will kill me, but the urge is getting stronger and stronger...

Go for it Mudpie. �Here's my mess. �I've had it for exaclty a year now. �I think I may have driven it 3x is all before it went to the surgeon's table. �A real M38 . �Only kicker, its going to be 12V for now and has a civy engine.
