My 51 CJ3a already had the F-head in it when I bought it, but had the original carburator.
You can put a Holley 1904 carb on it and still fit under the original hood line. This was used on the '60-'61 Falcon and a few others. It lines up with the existing opening and pretty much bolts right in with only some minor mods. I had to grind a little off the engine and use�2 gaskets to get clearance for the choke mechanism. �
The other mod was a need to 'gently' create an indentation on the valve spring cover. You can see it in 2nd picture here. The red arrows in the 1st pic are for another topic.
I got mine from rockauto.com for about $160 including the core charge. The trick is that you only have about 1.5 inches of clearance, so you have to be creative with the air horn. Haven't done that part yet. �The air filter in the pix does not fit under the hood, but since the PO already carved out a big hole in the hood it'll do for now.
