Frame horn mods

It's always great to come to the CJ3A Page forum and look at other folks' projects! Our 3A's have some features different from the 2A's and 3B's, so it's nice to have our little corner of the web to communicate.

The 3A frame horns were just bent over on the front and drilled through. Not the strongest set-up. After my front bumper calamity 2 years ago, I straightened the horns and welded them (pic below) to strengthen them before installing my new bumper from Walck's. Is anyone else doing this, or making other improvements to their 3A frame?

Just trying to get some more ideas out here for the guys working on projects right now! �;)

Chasm, good idea to run a bead on the top and bottom of the front fold before installing bumper. I'll have to write that down some where, and then put that note somewhere I can can find it when the time comes. Wait, what were we talking about?

Mine horns were cracked in the bottom bend for about 6 inches back from the end, I trimmed a couple of 1x1x1/8 angle iron to fit and welded those in after I welded up the crack.  If you look close on the inside you can see it, but you have to work to do it.  You do have trim around the rivets tha hold the spring shackle in place.

I just picked up a 3A frame for another project, and I would suggest looking at the welds for the spring brackets.. This one has severly undercut welds that actually weaken the frame in that location.. Another decent bead over top will make them a lot stronger.  I dunno if the bumper attachement area needs strengthening.. but your suggestion sure won't hurt!  Also Uglyjeep  up in wisconsin sells a strengthening plate for the 2A frame that doubles the vertical portion of teh frame in front of the crossmember, with a neatly laser cut insert.  A similar plate would definitely help out on the 3A frame.....
