So Many Old Army Jeeps
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:49:17 AM »
This photo must have been taken at the end of WWII. I don't know anything about it. A friend just emailed it to me. It's probably taken in Europe somewhere. Each Jeep would have it's own story to tell. Must have been published in Life Magazine per lower right corner.I wonder what became of them all.

That was in Okinawa, Japan. I member seeing that on Dave's site eWillys a while back so I had to do some digging to find it.
I get a sad feeling most of those were scrapped, my stomach turns to think that.
He has a vast collection of old vintage pics that you could spend hours looking at! I confess, I am guilty of doing just that.

Bretto,
ï¿½Thanks for filling in the rest of the info. I enjoyed every pic on both links.
ï¿½My earliest recollections of Jeeps in my home town was of Army surplus Jeeps. In this little farming town in the desert Southwest I remember there being three of them. One was owned by a neighbor just across the street. His youngest son, just 7 years older than me drove a lot when he got his driver's license at 16. I ran over to his place every time I saw him or heard him start that thing up. He would always let me ride along. It had no top. To this day, to me, real Jeepin' is with no top. That truly was the beginning of my love (and respect) for the iconic Jeep. By the way, that young driver finished high school, went on to college where he joined Army ROTC. He retired from the Army a few years ago as a Major General. He now lives again just a few block from where I live. I wonder if his military success was inspired by that old war surplus Jeep? Well, probably not, but we can choose to believe it if we want to.

I too heard this pic was from the pacific theatre, what makes it really interesting to me is the 4th jeep back. It has an occupation star on the hood. That symbol was for the European theatre, Army jeeps. I am not a G 503 expert but I think the jeeps around it are USMC jeeps which would be correct for Okinawa.   Point is that old feller has a unique story to tell.
Climbs trees, hides in the long grass, hangs out with wet dogs...
