Taking a road trip this weekend
« on: July 26, 2011, 05:37:05 PM »
So there is an antique boat motor show in Tomahawk Wisconsin this weekend, and I have to go there to find the cylinder head for a 1912 Wisconsin row boat motor. (It is a long story)

The jeep is currently living at the cabin which is about an hour away, and I have figured out that I can take only county two-laners to this show. I'm planning on taking my craftsman 250 peice set, since that is pretty much all we used to put the jeep together after paint, My trusty Hi-lift jack, and a bag of other stuff like wire and vice grips and junk like that.

What else would you guys bring? (I'm not bringing a case of beer, just so you know)
Its a jeep thing, but you would understand if you have ever lost your wallet.

I wouldn't bring the whole Craftsman set... paractically everything is 1/2" or 9/16" on these Flatties!

I always carry extra coolant, oil, and brake fluid in my tool bags for my off-road Jeep. If I tow the Willys somewhere, I bring that stuff along too, as well as some gear oil to top off the tranny and xfr case if they need it. A tow strap might be handy... just in case, and a gas can too. Never met a Flattie with a gas gauge I could trust!

Have a safe trip!
Jeeps are like potato chips. It's hard to stop at just one!

I keep a tool bag in my Jeep all the time. When I go on a long trip I would take what Chasm suggests and maybe more. There are stores on the way but when you get in the back country there are no stores.

I would take your tool set, plus the extra fluids and tow strap Chasm mentioned along with the following:

1. Hammer
2. Duct Tape and black electrical tape
3. Cable Ties
4. Screwdrivers
5. Cresent wrenchs (6" and 8"or 10" work well)
6. Needle nose pliers, wire cutters, vise grips and adjustible pliers
7. Flashlight
8. Tire iron that fits your lug nuts ;)
9. Last, but not least, a cell phone

I like to keep all this stuff in a mechanics tool bag. I have one kit made up for each of my daily drivers and add to them when I take a long trip. An emergency kit for normal road use doesn't have to be as extensive as one for a trail ride. Chances are you're not going to be too far from some sort of civilization. You would be amazed what you can "rig" to get you off the side of the road to the nearest town. For the more serious stuff, you have the cell phone to call a good friend at 10pm at night to come give you a tow. ;)

Well I guess I'm not bringing the whole set, just a complete set of ratchets and a few other random drivers. Jeeps may have been put together with only a few types of nuts and bolts, but mine got put back together with whatever was laying around the shop! I also finally found a left hand thread lug wrench, it was always a gamble before that and just hoping a right side tire went flat. ::) Theres late summer air in the tires, so hopefully there won't be any tire problems.

This list seems pretty good so far, I still have a couple of days to gather up some gear oil and stuff before I leave. I'm kind of planning on maybe 10 or 12 miles to the gallon, that seems pretty safe and if I bring the spare can I should have plenty of gas.

Go for it, sounds like a great trip, but watch that summer air, the humidity can throw your tires out of balance, especially that far north!!! 8-)

You might pick up a case of Point Beer for the relaxing you'll do when your done.

Larry,
I've looked at your page several times in the past, but it always amazes me how much work you have put into Frances!  It always provides me with inspiration to finish my project!  Very neat tool kit. :)

Thanks for the advice guys, I hope it is a really fun day. There is no way I'm finding the engine part for the old Wisconsin, but hopefully the show is cool regardless.

As for the road trip I'm not that worried. We built this jeep to drive. Hopefully it makes it there and back without any trouble.

Well the road trip went great, I didn't have any problems at all and went 88 miles. I even got 16 miles per gallon, if you trust the way I sorted it all out. On the way home I got caught in a monsoon rain, luckily I had left the sun top on that my dad made for me. I had to pull over for about ten minutes, I couldn't see the end of the hood it was raining so hard. In the end only my left side was a little damp  ;D

The first trip went so well that I talked my dad into driving into town this past weekend, and we went for a hundred mile round trip with no problems and no rain. We even got to drive on a dirt road for about half of it, which was fun.

Speaking of road trips, a friend was telling me his volkswagen had 166,xxx miles on it and how happy he was with it. So I did a bit of math and told him that my cherokee had about 218 trips from Omaha Beach to Berlin on it. He was very quiet after that. Maybe it was a little out of line?

Its a jeep thing, but you would understand if you have ever lost your wallet.

Glad to hear you had a good trip. I like my VW. I think the Germans make good stuff. So do the Japanese. If you can commit yourself to only buying American, you may be in for a hard time. How do you feel about Fiat? You might need to buy your friend a beer!

Well, I would say most of my problem stems from my sisters VW, which she got my parents to purchase for her with a huge amount of complaining. When I bought a car, it was wrecked and had to be put back together, but her car is nearly new, besides the fact that she had a new taurus before that. She complained that it was "an old lady car" until my father couldn't stand it and bought that stupid VW..... If she had a chevy instead, I would be out chevy bashing. That car just doesn't sit well with me, it is ill gotten gains in my opinion.

Whatever, Jeep forum, lets stick to 3As I think.

Its OK Jesse, sometimes we all gotta Rant !!! Thats why we have this page !!!  PS, My first cart was a 1967 Buick LeSabre, two door, 351 Wildcat motor with a 2 speed Power Glide transmission, it would go 55 mph in the 1/4 mile and it lost about 12 pounds of rust with every run. cost $400 bucks in 1972 and I paid for it myself.  What a dog!!!  My sister got a brand new Mitusbishi pickup 12 years later when she turned 16.  You can't argue with a dad and his daughter, it gets you no where man and quick !!!
