Jeep parts on the FREE for me
« on: November 19, 2010, 01:47:03 PM »
For several months a man at the local coffee/tea shop where we hold a political caucus everyday offered me some Jeep parts he has. He had a CJ2 from what I can tell. Well, today I finally got together with him and went through what he had.

I got a brake pedal arm, a used emergency/parking brake cable housing, an old three position heater motor switch I haven't seen one like in many years, and a good used WO carb. 8-), YES, now I have a good used carb to rebuild to replace mine. I got a carb kit some time back but because I want to do a real good rebuild job I would have the carb off for a long time :-[ and could not drive Annabel. Now I can rebuild the carb and keep driving Annabel all I want to, we enjoy each others company and hate to be apart very long. ::)

I started tearing the spare carb down and it's an interesting design. I bought some Berryman carb cleaner and will soak it as needed. I am going to read the Willys manual and the Army manual I downloaded so I know the quirks about it. Some have posted how hard they are to rebuild so I will soon find out.

I didn't think the old Chevy power packs with the metering rods was all that bad.

The throttle shaft has some slop as I expected so I may have to make bushing for the base and buy or make a new throttle shaft.

I just have to keep saying to myself, Carl, it's not a pocket watch so don't make it into one.

Ok, it's Gunk carb cleaner, not Berryman and it don't work very well. They suggest a 20 min. soak time and I left the body parts in for 3 hours and they were not clean enough. I removed all of them and put two back in after I brushed them down. In the morning I will check them and if clean to my liking I will dunk the others.

I wish I could get the stuff Berryman used to sell, it would clean a carb in less than an hour and make it sparkle. Damn you EPA >:(. Oh, and the itty bitty parts bucket they stuck in the one gallon pail is near worthless. I will have to make one of the correct size. Man I hate cheap companies.

I got all the jets out of the bodys and only one gave me a lot of grief. That's not to say the others were not hard to remove. A few moderate raps with a hammer and a flat nose punch of the right size changed their mind and they came out. Of course the dirty threads gave some trouble. I am an expert with hammers, chisels and punches. They don't call me Blacksmith Carl for nothing.

Man, that carb has more jets in it than Carter has Little Liver Pills.

This carb looks to have been setting dry for years. This is going to be fun because I have the spare and Annabel and I can keep going out on driving dates every day while I rebuild her new carb. As a matter of fact tonight and Sunday night are full moons and she and I like to take a moon light drive at or near midnight. This full moon is called the Beaver Moon.

Be sure to check back for more caustic comments and possibly some enlightening and worthy comments as I forge this old carb into new life.

Ya'll be good ya hea'

Interestingly, I wouldn't be surprised if CARB (California Air Resources Board) actually instigated the EPA rules that made those good old fashioned cleaners unable to be had. I don't know for sure, but it would surprise me with how powerful they've become.

Makes me wish I could find a Carter WO though, it'd be great to finish off my restoration when I complete it in a few years to have a proper carb instead of the Solex that is currently on my Jeep.

Carl, it's been a lot of fun to follow your posts on your carb overhaul.  We got to know each other well as we conversed back and forth with our similar tranny problems.  Now I am watching to see if you have an equally difficult time getting your overhauled carb to perform properly.  I first overhauled mine with a basic carb kit.  Wasn't happy.  Ordered and installed a master overhaul kit.  Still wasn't happy.  I purchased a Carter overhaul manual and downloaded other overhaul instructions.  Different CJ-3A members such as Larry, Doug, BobW (and possibly others) bought in to my dilemma and helped with suggestions.  I tore it down again and reinstalled my old metering rod among other things.  Finally--success.  The worst part of it all--it was performing perfectly before it tore it down.  I was hoping to make it run a little leaner.  Then YOU told me about checking the spark plugs after running a few miles--turning the engine off--coasting to a stop and pulling the plugs to check color.

Good luck with your carb!! Keep us posted.

Since you have time on your side you should be able to locate a Carter core. They are available on eBay from time to time at anywhere from $20 for a rough core to $125 for a nice one.

The WO carb is a little complicated looking and I am thinking adjusting the metering rod is the tricky part. One reason I wanted to rebuild a spare carb is because my current carb is doing just fine so now when I swap it out if the rebuilt one isn't right I can put the original one back on until I get things right.

Yes, it's the California laws that are dictating a lot of what the EPA does. California by making such laws sets the standard that the EPA uses. They are working together to control the rest of the USA.

I may soak the carb parts in Acetone after I use the worthless Gunk cleaner. The Acetone will dissolve any fuel residue left in them.

I bought a kit from Walck's a while back and it was the expensive kit I think. I don't have the fancy gages so I will have to wing it.

Ultimately, that's the goal, although I would love to find a good parts Jeep or disassembled project Jeep to source parts through. I'll likely be replacing the body on my Jeep, and it would be fantastic if I could replace it with an original instead of a Replitub.
