Ins't that the truth.� While in the shop, I'm not the most organized fellow. Anyone have a tool in your hand...set it down somewhere...2 minutes later you need this tool...then spend the next 30 minutes looking for said tool? :D

Now that is my favorite trick....tools, wallet,cell phone, you name it. I get lots of exercise crawling out from under the jeep to go get the tool I just left somewhere when I went to get some other thing that I needed.....

I do it all the time...as recently as this morning in my office. It's even better when you start the search having a conversation with yourself along the lines of:

"Ok..I haven't moved 6 feet from the spot I am in now since I last saw it...."

The rule I have is when you don't find it in your hand, it's time to stop, clean up and put away all tools back where they belong, and start over. It's faster than looking for the tool that is under some trash or box. John

Thanks for the clarification on that Bob. I kept going back and forth in my head trying to decide if add'l weight would affect the toe in. I'll leave it alone for now and make the final adjustment once everything is together...(or I'll completely forget about it and you can point me back to this post when I fly into a ditch after losing a battle with a horrible alignment during the initial test drive).  ;D

I have really been struggling with weld repairs. I'm pretty sure I have a Willys prototype where they tried to reduce weight by building a tub out of tin foil instead of heavy steel. The metal in the wheel houses that I've been working on blows to dust if I get within 10 feet of it with the welding gun. This is my first welding project so my skills leave a lot to be desired too.


I needed a change of scenery today so I unceremoniously removed the rotted tool box.





This looks pretty rough


So let's get rid of it


My first ever fabbed repair panel. I'm beaming with pride....


Could be better but could also be a lot worse


Much better luck down here. No blown holes!!


Well, pretty horrid but I'll take it for a first effort. I learned a lot here and this spot will not be that visible anyways. I'll continue to pick away at neatening it up.

Looks good to me...I think you are getting it....

Are you trying to run beads of weld or are you doing spots here and there and eventually filling in the gaps...stitch welding I think it's called....the point is to prevent excessive heat build up and warping/distortion of the metal parts....

I've been doing little spots and then filling in the gaps. If I think it's getting too hot I'll jump around to different sections or give it a rest entirely until things cool down. That goes for me and the metal  ;D

Yeah-you gotta stay cool 8-)

And make sure those edges are clean before you start...no paint or ink on the old metal, and wipe the new with denatured alcohol or something as new metal has oil on it....

Good work, the patch looks great....Kinda fun don't you think?

Randy stated the most important item, the metal needs to be CLEAN. Also remember you can't weld rust - no matter how hard you try.

My skills definitely leave a lot to be desired but of all places for me to start welding on a tub the wheelhouses were probably the worst choice. The metal is just so tender there. Even if I can patch them up now I will have ongoing concerns that new holes may appear in a short amount of time. The metal may literally be paper thin in places, if not worse.

Welding attempts in other areas have shown that there is hope for my skills yet. That patch shown above was passable and I have made a few other miscellaneous repairs that came out well.�

It sure is handy having a welder. I discovered a break in the alternator bracket this week which would have previously meant constructing a whole new bracket. Instead, a couple "zapp zapp zapp's" and it's good as new with less than 5 minutes work.
