Woods find! Willys truck
« on: August 25, 2014, 09:09:28 PM »
Struck a deal on this over the weekend. Will pick up in a week or two or whenever we can cut a line through the forest to get it out. Probably way too far gone for a project vehicle but if I can save some usable parts from the scrap yard I'll be pleased. Stay tuned....

How Cool..!  I once came across an MGA in the woods near Newberg NY...it had a tree growing  right up through the middle of it...

Hope you can save it but that might be a stretch... I've always wanted a pickup...with a flat head V-8...

Good Luck!

I owned a 61 willys pickup and only vehicle I ever regretted getting rid of. That flat head 6 hurricane engine is a really good one. I would drag it out and give it a good going over.

It was driven to and parked in its current location in 2002. I don't believe it has been started since. The motor appears to be complete including all the peripherals.

How long does it take an engine to seize? Would 12 years in the Maine woods do it? Either way, I've never had a Super Hurricane so I'm looking forward to the experiment.

Hopefully the block isn't cracked from cold. It is a great engine. Marvel in the cylinders is good advice.  A little soaking and and a little prodding.

Something like that would be easy to take the head off, then you could tap on the pistons with some wood or whatever directly. I don't see why it would be completely locked up though if the hood has been shut.

I mean if this runs yours will  :D

Hey Ryan,
Go for it.
I assume you already know about The Old Willys Forum.
http://www.oldwillysforum.com
It's the go-to place for Wagons and Trucks.
Much of what you've learned on your CJs will cross over, but there are some differences that will trick you.
The OWF is a very friendly place and will help you with any problems you find.

I second the Old Willys Forum.  Good group of guys.  Also, if you sign up for their All-Start membership, you get a discount at several jeep sites such as Walcks and Kaiser Willys.  If you order parts like I do, the discount pays for itself pretty quick.....

I got the truck home and spent the better part of a couple days cleaning and tinkering before I came to the unfortunate conclusion it was just too far gone ..check that...it was officially "Too Rusty to Save".

The body is completely missing. Most of the cab is rotted away. The motor is seized and I broke three head bolts trying to open it up. Both axles are wrong. The frame has been repaired in a couple spots and needs help in a couple more.

I would like a truck project but this is not the one to start with. It is just way too rough to be even a remotely practical starting point.

It is indeed a sad moment when you switch from "How can I at least get this old champ running again" to "How fast can I gut the parts from the carcass so I can sell everything off"...but that's where I'm at. Parting it out was the go-to "Plan B" safety net when I bought it anyways so I'm OK with that, but it's still not a fun decision.

I have most of easy stuff pulled off and tonight removed the non-original bucket seats which I have determined began life in a 1967 Pontiac GTO. I should be able to recover all of my purchase price with the sale of the seats alone. Along with the truck came two pick-up truck loads of spare parts so overall it was a good haul.

If anyone needs any trinkets for a '57 Willys Truck project (or a '67 GTO ;)) you know where to find me.

That's really too bad.  I'm a fan of the Willys truck.  This would have been a fun transformation to watch.

Yes. With bracket and all the riggings. Are you looking for one?
