Ryan, this was a bubba job, through and through.  Bob W looked at the winch and determined it belongs on the back of a 60s or 70s tow truck.  The PO was clever, but it's hard to imagine it actually worked.  Look at the plate back by the PTO.  It was just hovering in mid air.  Any pressure on that chain would have probably made that plate slap around like the Patriots slapped the Colts.

Randy,  I started to think it was some other issue, but as Ryan knows, I swapped carbs.  The Carter from my 2A made this engine idle perfectly.  Thanks for the tip though.  I'll remember that one.

Ah yeah, I was trying to think of something Jeep related.

I've been fighting some idle issues lately. This prompted me to rebuild some Carter WOs. The most recent acquisition (on the far right) was purchased from Mike here at the 3A. Thanks again Mike. This was the most challenging rebuild I've done. I had to drill out the long idle jet and main jet. I also had to re-tap the threads for the fuel bowl cover. All went well. I bolted it up for a test session...purred like a kitten.

That's a fine looking collection of WO's. I still have yet to tackle a rebuild. Is there some sort of instruction guide that you follow or do you just wing it?

Oh no, not a wing it type of project for me.  Initially, I was terrified to try this.  Bedrock (shows up here on occasion) talked me into trying a rebuild.

I used this guide

http://mightymo.org/Proj_Carter_WO_Rebuild.html

Very helpful.  It has blow up photos and narration, along with the original instruction sheet done by Carter.

Eventually, you wont need the guide.  Like everything, when you do it enough, it becomes second nature.

I've also learned a ton of stuff from our resident expert...ScoutPilot.

The weather is improving, so I'm back to work on this build. None of what I have to report is very interesting, but I may as well throw it out there.

Im working on the fenders. Does anyone hate fender repairs like I do? They are difficult to work with because of their odd shape. Welding, hammer/dolly work, and small amounts of filler. Lots of sanding and primer filler. It appears the previous owner had cut the fenders to make room for some V6 or V8 headers and pipes. Those areas have been patched up, but they were pretty rough. In my mind, these fenders need to look good. After all, they are the reason we pick a Flat Fender Willys over a CJ5 etc

After a couple miss-steps, we may have found the right color yellow. I am using a single stage Urethane paint. Ive added a flattener agent to it. I am trying to achieve a semi-gloss finish. This is a spare hood. This is the color, but I think I over did it with the flattener. Im going to shoot it again with a slight formula change.

Ive been running around the neighborhood in the chassis. It seems to be running fine, and leak freeso far.

My tub has been stored in the rafter for a year or so. Its nearly time to bring it down and finish some minor welding and repairs to the underside.

This is a side bar. I finally found a set of the correct 15" Kelsey Hayes wheels for my green Willys. The old wheels have always bothered me, so I jumped at the chance when a friend was ready to let these go. Sandblasted, primed, painted, mounted and installed...

Tis the season for Willys repairs, restorations and lots of driving fun. What a great time of the year. :)

Great to see an update Tim!

Those fenders are a bear....you are constantly flipping them one way or another..I saved them for last thinking they would be relatively simple...wrong!

The new wheels give it that finished look. Didn't the old ones have the ears for hubcaps?

These look "right".

Hey Tim,

I'm with ya on the fenders. I am at the same place on my project. Hammer, sand, hammer, sand, etc....gets really old after a while but necessary. What size tires are you running on the green willys?

Looking forward to September - Spark testing my rig next week. I have a trade show to do in Nashville starting this Sunday and not home until Thursday.

Regards,

George

Fantastic on all fronts! Your metal work, as always, shows your level of patience far exceeds mine. Really nice work there.

And I'm a huge fan of the '49 finally getting the wheels it deserves. Do us all a favor though, would you? Get that thing completely slopped up with mud at the FCT and post a picture ok?

Thanks all for chiming in. I really appreciate it.

See! My crappy wheels bothered everyone!! My wife thought I was crazy to go through all the trouble. She just doesnt get it. She still cant see the difference.

Contrary to what might be a popular assumption, I do tear it up in ODie. Proof positive below. See the mud?

2014 Fall Colors Tour

Admittedly, I do die a little inside when thinking about the hours required to clean it all back up. Even though my wife is with me while hammering through the mud, she still has the nerve to call it a Garage B%t@h.

Ok Tim, thanks. I do feel a little better now. I had to look close to confirm you didn't just Photoshop that "mud" on there but it appears to be legit.

The second photo is stellar. What an incredible view.

Great pictures!

It's as different as seeing a bear at the zoo or one in the woods...!

(I'm talking about the jeep of course)
