Third go around for the Jalopy
« on: April 22, 2014, 06:16:23 PM »
If you can remember back 3 years ago or so, I build a custom frame with coil spring suspension for my trail rig, The Jalopy. Well, this past winter, I was driving across a frozen pond when the front axle broke through. Long story short, winch + ice = - front axle. I ended up ripping it out and destroying the front end so....  [smiley=evil.gif]

Already have a great starting platform. A strong frame, awesome running 225, T18 and large hole D18. Just gotta do something about them stock 2A axles...

I have big plans for it now. YJ leafs, D44 rear, NT D30 up front, tera low kit in the D18, Ox lockers front and rear, super swamper boggers 35 x 10.5s and some more goodies. I just can't resist myself on this build. Already have a stock 3A for wheeling (Ted) and now I want something a bit more radical that I would feel comfortable with letting a lady friend drive on the trail.

I picked these guys up today. $200 each.  [smiley=thumbup.gif] D30 has 2.92s and I think the 44 has 4.88s if I can do my math right. I spun the pinion 2 times, and the short axle spun just over once and the long side didn't move at all.

Oh haha, yeah that. No, Ted is fine. That was just a joke. I said that while going across the ice at 40mph, his wheel would cut either left or right and I couldn't stop it. What I was trying to say is that he has a mind of his own, like Herbie. In reality, I was doing it, but I was saying that to give him a personality.

Nate..........very carefully back away slowly from this next project. If you start involving a "lady friend" all your spare time and money for these projects will mysteriously disappear. :-* Your long, late nights in the shop tinkering on things will be a thing of the past.

Before you know it, you'll be buying flowers instead of rear ends... :o

Haha, don't worry Mark. She has a boyfriend, so don't worry. She wants a jeep, but can't afford it, so I'll let her borrow mine while I drive Ted.

I went down this road with my YJ... ended up putting 2.5 ton rockwells under her.  I suggest not letting the bug bite that deep. :-/

With it spring under, it was only an inch taller than Ted. That wasn't gonna do...

Well, today I'll rip it back apart for paint. I'm going to do it up as a Chester fire dept jeep since I'm on the volunteer fire dept here in town.

I like the new changes...Is that Ted's tailgate I see? Custom top or did you add fasteners to the windshield to do the military top thing? Does the extra height make it feel any different off road?

Gonna be a tough winter they say, hope you have a heater and side curtains so you can still go places when the blizzards hit. I think you'll need the ground clearance for the snowbanks.

The tailgate was one I restored for wall art in my room. The top is from Ted, M38 winter enclosure. I haven't driven it much on the road, but it is kinda sketchy because it wanders. I have to mess with the steering adjustments some and add a stabilizer. I put a 40,000 but heater in and with the full top on, you can drive around in a t shirt on 20 days!

I had to put the hockey pucks in the back to make the body sit right. The front mounts are on 1/4" rubber.
