Front pto gear case

I have a 49 cj3a with a pto winch.   I have taken all of the case bolts out of the gear case at the rear of the engine, but the bottom, where the propeller shaft goes forward does not want to come free.  What is the proceedure to remove this assembly?  And what lube should be in there?  What drained out looked like water.....absolutely clear didnt want to mix with engine oil in the drip pan.

It is the blue looking box on the end of the tc.

It is the bluish box at the end of the transfer case.

Does your PTO have the five pipe plugs in the rear of the case? I have a Koenig 51 and it has pipe plugs, and my only guess is that you remove the pipe plugs, and reach in through the holes with a socket and extension and remove the five bolts that fasten it to the back of the T/C...If you've done that, and it still won't budge, maybe you can remove the back cover of the PTO and see what's holding it on there...

yes, remove the pipe plugs and then the bolts inside should be allen head. Be sure not to drop the bolt or special lock washers inside.

Thanks, guys I'll check.  I havethe 5 plugs, and it is a Koenig.

What about the lube?

I don't know about the lube.

There is a chain and a couple of sprockets in there, so maybe just engine oil? I don't think there is a lube passage between the transfer case and PTO case..

I would think that the same oil as the transfert case and transmission should be used.

I have been and may always be shopping for a winch setup. There are lots of different winches out there!!

Can you take pictures of all your different components and either post them here or email them to me?

The PTO units confuse me...the 50 series are for CJ's so I've read, but even the 41's have "50" stamped on the front covers...

There is a Koenig 100 for sale locally but I'm not sure if the shafts and PTO unit are correct for a 3a....and how about that center bearing!!??

Model 41 is for truck and not for CJ based on Herm the overdrive guy.

You should check his site under the technical info and schematics. A lot of good pdf info.

The model 51 is lubrificated through the transfert case based on those info.

I called about that winch that is advertised locally but I'm not sure if it was meant for a jeep..more likely a pickup..
