Help identifying possible factory grill mod - PICS

I've got a late 2A or 3A grill that has what looks to be a factory mod below the passenger headlight bucket and in the first two inboard grill slats.� It looks too good to be a bubba mod, but my research on the net has resulted in nothing that looks like this.

Any ideas?

Looks like the mod extends to the first two vertical members on that side...? Especially from the back....

Looks factory to me. Maybe for some kind of clearance for a handle/lever for a winch or capstan.

It looks like both the headlight rim and the parking light rim would overlap the indent....

Was this grill mounted on a jeep when you got it, or just loose..?

Been pondering this a bit and I think I have seen pic's of the fire jeeps with an assembly on front with a handle. Pretty foggy memory but Willys would make just about anything for anybody if order was enough for a change. Those grills are thick and I can't fathom what it would take to press that metal. It is pressed isn't it or is it a weld job?

The largest indent is tacked welded in several spots.

It was a loose grill in the pile of extra parts that came with the project jeep I just bought.

The mod does extend through the first two slats, but the second slat's mod is only visible from the back, almost like it would be a pocket for round rod to terminate in (if that makes sense).

Possibly a clearance slot for some front mounted equipment, such as a pump of some sort....The fire jeeps did have front pumps and I know of one that had been opened up under the headlight so a hose could go thru there, but this is too small for that...Maybe a winch engagement lever for some odd winch?

There is a pipe in that area but it's hard to tell if the grill was modified. The grill could be from an earlier version, CJ2A?
