Remove timing cover oil seal

Lookin' for tips on removing the oil seal from the timing gear cover. Looks to me like it is not possible to press it out from either side and I'll be darned if I can find any kind of lip or edge to snag with a seal puller. How do you guys do it?

I don't know how the machinist got it out but there is a "cup" spot welded to the inside of the cover that holds the seal in place. Be careful not to remove/loosen it as well....

Mine was loose when the engine was dis-assembled but the machinist had a replacement cover in the back room....

Yup, it's that spot-welded doo-dad that makes it impossible to press out the seal. By the way, what IS that thing and what does it do best?

I think I might be able to improvise a tool that would work, but I'm thinking there's one of those "oh yeah! Of course!" kind of solutions out there somewhere...

I don't remember what I did on mine when I rebuilt it. I know, that is a lot of help.

The cup holds the seal centered.....I guess..

There is a tool that might work...

I don't know what it's really called, we always called it a........well, it was like a screwdriver but instead of a blade on the end it had this nasty hook....you could hook just about anything with one of those....

I can relate to that, Garage! There are already a lot of things I don't remember, and here I am trying to learn something I'll probably forget sooner or later.  I think I'll start shooting videos with sound along with taking lots of pics as I stumble through this rebuild. It's a good thing this is so much fun.
