drop down resistor
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:14:09 PM »
I have a 6V CJ3A horn that I would like to use in my '51 3A, but my Willys has been converted to 12V.  Can anyone tell me what would be the proper value of drop down resistor to use to get the voltage down, and where I might get one of these?  I know that some people use a 6V horn with a 12V system with no resistor and are careful how they use the horn.  I would prefer to install a resistor if I can get one.   Thanks in advance.

Get a VOM and measure the resistance of the coil in the horn. Put an amp meter in line with the horn and blow it to get a reading. Volts times amps = watts so X=amps so 6v times X = watts and that is the wattage of the resistor you will need for the horn. A resistor equal to the resistance of the coil and the wattage it draws is the value of the resistor you will need.
