Rust in my Transmission
« on: May 03, 2012, 10:53:15 PM »
So my farm find rebuild hasn't had the transmission touched in 22 years. It was stuck in neutral so I popped the top off. There was about an inch or two of lude still in the box. That much I could have lived with, but there is rust on the rods that the throw forks ride on, and there is rust on the gear faces, worst of all is the large gear closest to the transfer case. In the pic it's the gear on the right
Is it worth a rebuild as is, how may if any gears would ya replace, any thoughts are most appreciated on this one.

It's hard to say without being there to look at everything. I would take it completely apart and sand blast all the gear teeth, not the bores or splines. If the gears are heavily pitted I would replace them, If the bores are pitted at all I would replace them. I would replace ALL the bearings and blocking rings.

You may in fact, have to replace a lot of parts. You may want to check Walcks, Novaks and others for an exchange tranny/transfer assembly.

The rust in the pics looks like it may just be surface rust.  Here in the dry Southwest that's what we see mostly and it's not too threatening.  But, like Carl says, if there is heavy pitting I would replace them.  Gear oil will fill a lot of less serious pitting and they will give you no trouble.  Any gears or shafts that you do feel need to be replaced, I hope you will consider paying a bit more for NOS or even serviceable old stock parts.  I would discourage you from using foreign-made reproductions.

Hey John,

I ran into the same issues with my transmision gears. There was water in the case and as a result most of the gears were pitted so bad I had to replace them. I was just going to clean the teeth up and let her run but experience has taught me that cutting corners on these rebuilds will cost you more down the road. You may also find a good used unit out there. The other thing is that in most cases you will have to replace the syncronizer for sure to keep it from popping out of second gear - a common problem -

Good luck
