Let the fun begin.
« on: January 03, 2012, 12:00:41 AM »
After a long hiatus, I am ready to continue the restoration. At this point the chassis has had a nice washing and now I am removing some rust. Reading what a couple others have done, I am experimenting with a molasses bath for rust removal. So far it is working well.

Does anyone have a recommendation for undercoating? I have researched a couple options but wondered what would be a good product for keeping my jeep original. Or, does it not really matter and any undercoating product will be fine.

Thanks, all. Look forward to the community here.

I'm not in favor of undercoating because when it develops cracks in the coating water will get trapped inside and rust will have a good working area.

Carlsjeep,

How would you recommend I treat the metal? Enamel paint? I have seen rubberized undercoating that is not brittle.

It looks like your to far along for it but if you have the frame and other metal parts sand blasted I'd use one of the primers that bond with rust and clean metal to stop rust then paint them with a good enamel paint.

Hi Ryan.

By reading the posts here, I got a little scared to use any type of undercoating. I also chose against POR15 because I read some posts that you can't successfully top coat it...so black is the frame color option, which may be fine for your restoration. It's really shiny too.

I wanted my frame to match the rest of the Willys, Olive Drab. I used a product called Mastercoat Silver. It is one of the high tech moisture cured primers, and it had features I was happy with. It can be used on rusty or clean metal. It was developed to coat commercial tin roofs. It holds up to a 15,000 hour salt spray test. It is impervious to most chemicals. It can be sprayed or brushed. It fills in minor pitting. It is sandable. It can be sprayed in cool weather. And the big one for me, it can be top coated with any paint.

I sandblasted my frame, two coats of Mastercoat, one coat of Gelespies 111 red oxide primer, and two coats of Gelespies 23070 semi-gloss Olive Drab and waa-laa, hopefully a long term rust free frame.

I also used the Mastercoat Silver on my tub.  Coinsidently, my gas tank leaked and ruined the paint on the floor pan. The gas stripped the 111 primer and 23070 paint right off. It did nothing to the Mastercoat Silver coating.

I read my post back and must assure you, I am not a salesman for Mastercoat. For me, so far, it has done everything they say it will.
