Spin-on filter
« on: August 26, 2011, 09:41:57 AM »
What is the general opinion here of the location of a spin on filter? Anyone have a particularly functional/asthetic installation? I was leaning toward a remote setup on the passengers fenderwell interior. Thanks for your input, it's always informative.

what's wrong with the canister type? You don't replace it everytime you change oil since it's a bypass filter you can go every other time.

If you go to a screw on type you still have to plumb it the same as the canister so why not mount it where the canister filter is now.

I'd mount it where the bypass filter is now.

My 3A had a screw on oil filter when I bought it and I really like it.  Uses a Wix or Napa 1050 filter and is extremely convenient to change out.  It is mounted just in front of the tube for the dipstick and the bracket is secured by the front two head nuts on the right side.  Two steel braided supply lines run from the bottom of the bracket to the usual places on the engine.  I don't know where you buy these set-ups but it works great.  Obviously a different look than the original Fram.  If you find out where to buy them, you might let us know.

I think a Remote filter base, available at advanced auto and probably many other places is what was used.  Is your filter facing up or down ( screwed on the bottom of the bracket or on top)....just thinking of mess prevention during changing since the generator is directly below that spot. Thats why I was looking at the fender well for mounting.
Thanks

Just thinking of what I wrote, if yours was on top of the bracket (bolted to the head) it wouldn't let the hood close would it.....another senior moment!!!! :-X

Well, the bracket is sort of "Z" shaped so it drops the filter down along side the block 4 inches and puts the base of the bracket 4 inches above the generator.  The top of the filter is 2 inches below the top of the filler tube (dipstick).  The filter screws down onto the bracket and the supply/return oil lines are below the bracket.  When I unscrew the filter the oil that is still in the filter just drips into the "cup" that is the bracket and it is very easy and clean to remove.  I'd post a photo but can't seem to do it from my Iphoto application which is where I have all my photos.

I can visualize your set up.  I was worried about oil spillage during the filter change in that position. Thanks for the info

Here's a picture of the Fram filter on my 3A which had been moved to allow room for a HY LO plow pump. When I took the plow off, I moved the filter back to the original location.
