Captive Cage Nuts!
« on: January 26, 2011, 05:51:39 PM »
Hi everyone.

Looking for the right kind of nuts, the right sizes, and a decent supplier for replacement captive/cage nuts. I replaced the floor pan and need one to mount the driver side seat. A couple are missing from the transmission cover to floor mounts. (The hole is sort of square shaped on these.) And finally, I am missing one on the firewall. Not sure what was attached on this one, but the sheet metal is all torn around where it once was.

So, Sizes? Types? Suppliers?

Project is a '49 CJ3A, (#36662). Motor replaced with a GPW (strange or no markings where markings should be) Transmission and Transfer appear to be original. Date plate on transfer case: 5-10-48. Willys ran great before I tore it apart. Hopefully, it still will when I put it back together.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and help.

  • If it's not broke, it's not used.

I replaced a couple on my tub also. Got them at Ace, as well as Home Depot. The shift cover is 1/4" standard thread, except the top left closest to the foot feed is 5/16. fBe carful if you buy new bolts that they are not so long they hit the trans. or transfer cases. The seats are 5/16, standard. At least my '53 is. The firewall can be anything from 10-32 to 5/16 depending on what mounts to it. Jim

Thanks for your response Jim.

The nuts you picked up at Ace, did they have the CAGE and nut?  I did look at Depot, and they did have the nut, but didn't see them with the cage.

yes, they had the cage.  Try a screw or fastner wholesaler.  Most of them will sell to you on a cash basis.  Jim
