Need a Bikini top
« on: March 23, 2014, 01:53:48 PM »
The web doesn't seem to have any bikini tops for a 1951 CJ3A. My local upholster has retired for medical reasons. Does anyone know who makes good heavy duty bikini tops? Something that will withstand driving past tree limbs close to trails.

A bikini top is about the simplest top you could make....I'd try to find some heavy duty canvas and make it...Hardest part is going to be attaching the straps..the rest is all hemming the edges and doubling the front so you can put a rope in it.  if you have access to a decent sewing machine I think you'd be happiest with your own custom made top. A local upholsterer might be a good second bet.

Any bikini style tops I have seen online were overpriced cheap junk.

You've seen Jpet's make your own top thread on the 2A page...lots of how to info there.

The ones for a CJ5 fit, but are just a little wide. You can fold the corners and use the snaps to make it look nice.

Nate, that is the way I wanted the top, rolled over the edge and snaped down like the top I have on my Jeep now. Thanks for the info.

From all I looked at on the internet I think I will be making my own or find an upholsterer close by. They are to short for what I want.

A cj7 bikini top works real well, minimal adjustments, I got mine from smiths,

I finally got in contact with jpet and he sent me a pattern of a bikini top he made for a CJ2A. With a few modifications I will make one for my CJ3A. I will still try to find an upholster to make it.

Carl, if you have a roll bar this should work fine, its just like the one I've got and for 35 bucks you can't really go wrong.

I don't have a roll bar. I have a length off conduit bent into a bow for support behind the seats.

That should still work, all you need is a support behind the seats to keep the top up.

I am looking at making it so I can use my doors along with the bikini top. I thing the fix will be an easy one, at least for me.
