Saturday's project
« on: March 24, 2012, 05:44:38 PM »
For those who don't know, besides jeeps, my other hobby is antique hit and miss engines. I have 6 of those now. ::) I got my first one (the engine in this video) in June of last year. It was locked up. I took it completely apart and freed everything up. The nice thing about these is you don't have to bring them to a machine shop to get work done usually. ;) Collectors flip when they find a complete engine with the right patina. That is why it looks so crappy, but thats the way we like them! The shiny ones aren't quite as cool. They look best in work clothes (and they are pain to keep clean ;D). Anyways, here is a video of just the engine when I first got it. Since then, I got it running like a clock (like in the other video). You can keep track of time by the firing! This one is a 2.5 HP.

I finally finished building my main engine show piece today. My '23 Alpha hit and miss engine and Edson diaphragm trash pump. The two trucks (carts) socket into each other to make transporting them easier. As seen in the video, I have to start it without the suction stub on and then I like to let it run a bit afterwards to clear out the pump for next time. The interesting thing is how much power is in those flywheels. I shut it down by holding the linkage that allows it to freewheel and it keeps that pump moving for quite some time! I also like how quickly the pump picks up water.

This year, I'll be hitting the fairs and engine shows with my 3A, trailer, engine and pump! Should be a pretty neat combo!

And my other engines, '26 Witte and '27 Fairbanks Morse (restored). Both are 2 horsepower

My current project is an English 1914 Lister 5HP engine. These are very unique with the "Ball Top" water hopper. Very rare and complete. This piston for it is 6" diameter.  :o It is close to running condition. Waiting on getting a lifter repaired. I know, I'm a strange young man, aren't I? :o

Cool videos. If your not too far from southern CT there's a couple shows you'd like,

and The Tobacco Valley Flywheelers

Fascinating!!  I've always been intrigued with those old engines.  Thanks for sharing.

Same here! One of the shows I go to is an antique truck, tractor, engine and motorcycle show (everything I like!) and I decided last year that I wanted a hit and miss engine. Started talking to one guy and he had that Alpha that he sold to me for a wicked good price.
