About a week ago I bought a CJ2A Jeep to part out. It has some parts I will use and a fan for Calvin. Today I pulled the steering wheel and fan off and they came off easy.
Then I tried to pull my steering wheel. I put a large puller on it and lots of force and it did not budge. I heated the hub and made the "plastic" crumble, still it didn't budge. I broke the "plastic off around the hub, heated it more and applied candle wax then tried to pull it and still it didn't budge.
Ok, I am more determined and harder headed than the steering wheel so I got out the die grinder and cutoff wheel and by gum after splitting it I got it off. I cleaned the "new used" wheel splines and the shaft splines and slathered them with anti seize compound and the nut and assembled them. After moving the wheel twice to get it lined up right driving straight I was done, I think.
Now I understand how hard it is to get a Jeep steering wheel off without destroying it. Had I wanted to save my steering wheel it may have taken a week or more to get it loose. I will say I was not a happy camper during that task.
I also put the top back up from the trip to Utah at Calvins. I have been driving it with the top down and sometimes the windshield down. Oh, and I put seat belts in to make my wife happy. She didn't like feeling like she was falling out on some of the trails we took. She was bouncing around in the Jeep like a rubber ball while hanging on to each side of the seat frame.
