dana 18 t case removel
« on: August 25, 2025, 12:07:09 PM »
i have a 48 2a in a barn At my in laws, it's a a distance away. i want to remove the dana 18 transfer case. so i can work on it at home. i'm a few bolts way from getting it out. can i get it out with out removing the sticks ? and with out cutting up the body ? the light isn't great and the floor is dirt. i'll have maybe 3 hours to get it out. i'm sure the shift pin would be fun to get out and damn near impossable well it's in the jeep. thanks for your input.

I don't think there's enough room in the floor hole to get the shifters through - they're a bit spread out at the top.

I can remember the pin being a bit fussy the first time I removed it.  There's supposed to be a zerq in the end of it.  After loosening the set screw, I just wiggled and twisted until it slid out to the tub floor.  That's enough room to get one stick out then the other slides off too.

Are you going to leave the transmission/crossmember in place?  Those cases are heavier than they look.  Don't be under it when you get all the bolts out!

Pretty sure the grease zerk on the end of the shifter pivot pin was a military thing not on the CJ's.
Could be mistaken.

All of them should have a zerk.  The shifters need lubricating.  When you get the pivot pin out (after removing the TC), you'll see it's hollow with threads on the end and a hole, about midway, for the grease to exit.

In the Service Manual (SM), section K, FIG 196-TRANSFER CASE - LATE CJ-3B, CJ-5, CJ-6 , item 29-Lubrication fitting.

I know what you're thinking (figure is labeled for later models), so I looked in the 1949 Parts Manual (PM) for 2A and 3A and it's there also.

See attachment below.  There it's labeled item 26.

yes there is a zerk fitting, no luck getting grease in there. the jeeps had a ruff life and i'm sure it's seized up.  i just don't have days to mess with getting that pin out. i plan to leave the trans in place. i do have a trans jack that i plan to use to drop the case down with.

 thanks

You can get the Shift canes out by removing the Pivot pin the pin does not need to come completely out just slide to the right far enough to allow the canes to slide off.

If you are going to rebuild the TC I strongly recommend Sal's rebuild kit from Vintage Jeeper. And the upgrade to both sealed bearings and the tapered intermediate bearings. It adds to the cost but in the long run it will save money.

There is a bolt securing the transfer case to the transmission that is installed from front-to-back, be sure to remove it....it is below the shifter cane casting....

Also, the t-case casting is the rear transmission bearing retainer... ...you need to remove the shift tower and use some wire to hold the output shaft in place or it will slip back and all those little roller bearings will end up in the bottom of the transmission...
