Stock steering or Saginaw when installing a Dauntless
« on: January 28, 2020, 02:02:54 PM »
The data sheet here on doing this mod says upgrading to Saginaw is unavoidable when switching over to the Buick V6 but I've had another local shop say not necessary. What has been your experience?

Here I am test fitting a standard Ross box in relation to the Dauntless in a 3B frame.
This is simply to determine if it fits in case my proposed Saginaw changes don't work out.

Above I have placed the Dauntless in standard Hurricane left / right location. ( 1-1/2" left of frame centerline)
As you can see the Ross sector shaft just touches the side of the block.
Engine must go toward frame center and to the right.

Exacting Dauntless position now becomes my main concern.
I must address side placement, fore / aft placement, and height.
After carefully testing Dauntless right/ left placement in a flatty I have come to fully agree  with factory Dauntless fitment into the CJ-5.
I feel that correct Dauntless placement trumps all other modification concerns.
The Dauntless should be moved 3/4" to the right from standard 134 engine CL and should be exactly 3/4" left of frame CL.
Correct engine placement will allow the Ross sector shaft to clear the Dauntless block.

oldtime, forgive my inexperience but when you reference right and left (of center line) for engine placement is that looking at the frame from the front bumper or viewing from the drivers seat?

Sitting in drivers seat because they are called LHD jeeps.

I have a thorough write up on flatfender mods if your interested.
The modifications detail how to install all of the factory advancements (used from 1941-1985) into an old flatty.
Like the Dauntless engine and factory Saginaw steering upgrades etc.
