Hello! I'm Zack. My father and I are in the process of doing a restomod of a basket case 1951 CJ3A that we purchased in 2017.
My father an I have a long history of owning Jeeps. Starting back in 1982, my father purchased and partially restored a 1941 Ford GP, serial number 8541, the 41st first series GP built. Unfortunately he sold it in 1997 due to lack of funds. I tracked it down a few years ago with the hopes of getting it back, but it has made it's way back to England and is undergoing a restoration.
Since then my father and I have owned several newer Jeeps. He currently owns a 1988 Comanche and I have a 1992 Wrangler than I've owned for 13 years.
Now on to the Willys....
The Jeep: A Basket Case 1951 CJ3A
We bought this Jeep in April of 2017. To most it would be a lost cause. However, I seem to have a thing for resurrecting lost causes. So it may be more work, but it will be worth it in the end.
This CJ3A is quite the "Jeep Salad". What we have here is a 1951 CJ3A chassis, a 1948ish CJ2A body, M38 windshield frame and a later CJ3B/CJ5 F134 engine.
The Plan
Powertrain: Keep /restore the factory L134/T90/D18.
Axles: Keep the D25/D44
Chassis/Suspension: repair damaged frame/keep stock height springs
Electrical: Convert to 12V and electronic ignition
Brakes: Dual res master cylinder, GM disc conversion for front / 10" early CJ5 drum rear
Body: Search for CJ3A tub or buy new reproduction
Wheels and Tires: Stock 16" steelies with vintage style all terrain tires
We are will into the build. We have a running freshened up engine, rebuilt transfer case and transmission, and rebuilt axles. I will be posting a build thread later on.
