What gaskets are these?
« on: May 13, 2016, 09:13:49 PM »

I got these thrown in with a pile of stuff including a transfer case.  The seller told me it was a gasket/seal set for the Dana 18 transfer case, but I'm not so sure.

If it is, it's missing the gasket for the back cover plate (where the OD would go).  Two of them (and why the two different ones?) do look like they fit between the 18 and the T-90.  Why the different oil seals?

Anyway, I need a full set the gaskets for both the 18 and the T-90, but I need to know what I've got before I order what I don't have...  Or do I just need to order both kits and live with some spares?

Thanks,

-Paul

You have a mismatched assortment (with duplicates and many missing) of T90 and D18 gaskets and seals. I'm not sure what the one on the very bottom left is or the silver one just to the right of that belong to but I'm pretty sure it's not a Willys.

One thing I've found with gaskets is you can never have too many. It's easy enough to ruin them and it's a real bummer being dead in the water on a project for a week while you await the arrival of a $2 gasket. If it were me I'd order fresh complete sets for your T90 and D18 and throw these ones in the "spare gasket" box. The sets are cheap enough that you're probably better off that way than trying to fill out what you have with individual pieces anyways.

I agree with Ryan...nothing worse than tearing the only gasket you have for a particular job..

Or, get some Harbor Freight hole cutters, an Exacto knife with extra blades, and some gasket material, and some patience!

Thanks guys.  I ordered kits for both D18 and T90 last night.  Of course, when I added all the other parts I needed, it came out at almost $800...  (Most of that is for the engine rebuild, though. Pistons, rings, gaskets/seals, and a manifold to replace the one that fell off my workbench.)

Well I hope you got "free" shipping!!

Bummer on the manifold! Was it the intake or exhaust?

Sometimes the original manifolds don't mate well with the reproductions, so you have to get both manifolds from the same source...

But check them out when the parts arrive and go from there...they may fit fine..

If needed you can have the manifold assembly machined to fit flat against the block..

This is how my original intake manifold mated with the reproduction exhaust manifold....I ended up finding a good original exhaust manifold and everything then fit....

If you don't have any gasket material, you should get some........right now.  It is only a matter of time before you ruin a gasket on a Saturday afternoon after the parts store closes and Sunday is forecasting clear skies and 75 degrees.....

Seriously though, an assortment of gasket material can be bought at NAPA for around $10 or so.  It is really handy to have around for all kinds of things besides Jeeps.  The form-a-gasket stuff is nice also, but if you get carried away, it can break off inside and plug up passage ways.

Exhaust.  (If the pictures on Walck's are accurate, anyway.  I hope--that's what I ordered.)

No free shipping to Canada.  I'm just hoping that they don't call and ask for more than the $72 they charge for any international order.  (They do that for larger orders--like when I bought brake drums.)
