Electronic Distributor Question
« on: December 28, 2014, 08:37:53 AM »
For the last few days it has been pretty warm here in Maine. I took the opportunity to work on the jeep.  I noticed something odd when I was performing an initial turnover of the unit.   Yesterday after getting the motor installed and pressure priming the oil galleys. I turned the motor over with the plugs out.  I wanting to make sure everything seemed OK before the initial starting.   When the motor was cranking the distributor seemed to wobble.   Not much maybe 5-10 thousandths.  But, it was definitely wobbling.  I had installed one of the electronic conversion distributors.  The motor was frozen when I tore it down.  So I never had the opportunity to watch it run.
My questions are as follows-
1)      Has anyone else seen this?  Is it normal?
2)      I had installed a new oil pump, having seen all of the problems with the aftermarket pumps does the wobbling distributor point to an oil pump problem?
3)      Has anyone else installed the electronic distributor?  Is there anything I should be aware of?
Thanks in advance for your help.

If it was me, I would use the stock distributor and put petronix in.

Anyways, is the hold down clamp installed? That would stop it from wobbling. Both my Lheads have very tight fitting distributors.

My distributor is tight. Did you measure the .005 / .010 run out with a dial indicator?
The oil pump should have no effect on the run out of your distributor.

If I ever get my engine to run more than an hour or so I will be switching to a petronix.

Im taking the advise of others and will be disassembling and checking my second new oil pump. They are known to be bad.

This may be stating the obvious but make sure the distributor is seated in all the way. That little tab on the end of the shaft if slightly offset to one side. Make sure it is oriented correctly before installing it. I usually shine a flashlight down and to see the orientation of the slot in the oil pump and then insert the distributor accordingly. Once it's close turn it back and forth until it seats. As stated above, also make sure you have the clamp installed correctly.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.  I won't be able to work on it again for a week or so.  I will check what you guys mentioned.  I will also try to take a video of it and post it.

Happy New Year!
