Spring shackle parts
« on: October 18, 2014, 06:43:32 PM »
What do I need to buy?

When I tore my jeep apart it had home-made shackles on the springs, and I'd like to go back to the U shackles.

I've just ordered new springs locally.  They will come with the one bushing in them.  The spring shop actually had a parts book that looked like it had been printed in the 50's or 60's, and it a section for Willys.  More expensive than Walck's, but most (or all) of the difference is probably made up in shipping and customs broker fees.  (I never could get a price estimate for shipping from Walcks.)

I think my pivot bolts are good, so I'll keep those.

Walcks lists the U-bolt, so I'll get those.  (2 each LH and RH)  Is that it?  Any bushings needed?  Do those U-bolts come with the nuts?  (The picture looks like the grease nipple is on a nut--is that right?)

So, is it just the four U-bolts, or do I need anything else?

Thanks,

-Paul

If the pivot bolts are good then the four u-shackles's ought to do it.  The U-shackle nuts aren't really nuts...they are sort of a threaded bushing with a hex head on one end...the same end as the grease fitting

Remember, the left handed ends of the u-shackles go through the front left and right rear spring loops....the service manual explains it....

are your spring to axle U-bolts usable?

Usable, I think so.   They're not beautiful, though.  Or is they something that I should just replace?

I've replaced mine but sometimes I wonder why......I've read that the bolts...any bolts..can stretch and not take a proper torque.....The Walck's product is better than the "other guy's", having had used both....
