4WD pulls to the right
« on: September 14, 2014, 02:20:03 PM »
My 3A tracks nice and straight down the road at cruising speeds, but when I put it in 4WD high and cruise, I get a very slight pull to the right.  Anyone else experience this?  Maybe something to do with the short drive shaft on the right???  I'm stumped.

My guess is a brake is adjusted too tight.

I'm stumped.  It would have to be something at the front axle once it's locked in.  Maybe a problem with the locking hub on the passenger side?

I'm reaching.

Are you driving on pavement? Are all the tires exactly the same height?

All tires same height and air pressure, and a brake is not hanging up.  And, yes on pavement - I doubt I would even notice it on gravel.  Straight and level in 4wd on the pavement - just wanting to move around some of the knuckle lube from time to time.

Do you have lockout hubs? With the hubs engaged you don't need to put the T/C in 4wd to move the lube around in the diff or the knuckles, the axles and diff gears will move with the wheels.

If you don't have lockout hubs you are moving the lube all the time when you drive, once again, no need for the T/C to be in 4wd.

I don't think 4wd on dry pavement is ever a good idea, even briefly.

modern full-time 4wd vehicles have some sort of center differential that allows the 4wd to be used on pavement

No doubt good advice to not EVER use 4wd on pavement.  And I do have locking hubs, so will stop with the 4wd.  Still, wondering what could be going on to have this slight pull.  I probably don't want to know.  ;)   Thanks for the input!

I really would not expect a vintage 4wd vehicle of any sort to track straight on pavement while in 4wd.....our 2002 Landcruiser pulls a little under acceleration....it's full time 4wd

4wd is really 2wd, but it's one front axle wheel and one rear axle wheel unless you have locking differentials...

So I'm guessing that your left front wheel is pulling and the right one is not, and so the jeep pulls to the right...in another circumstance the right wheel may be getting the power and it will pull to the left.....

Others can probably give a better explanation....
