oil lines
« on: August 19, 2014, 10:46:38 AM »
Just a heads up for all guys who have purchased oil lines from Kaiser Willys. The line that runs from the filter to the block behind the fuel pump came apart dumping most of the oil before I caught it. When I removed the line I pulled on the other end and it also came apart easily. I called KW and they are still selling these same oil lines and gave me attitude!! In my opinion they are interested in you're money and not you're jeep project.I discovered that Walcks had the same problem when they used to sell these lines but they did something about it. They now have their lines made in the USA. I have ordered a set.The KW lines must be made offshore because the nuts are metric. I would hate to see anyone lose an engine or just a big oil bath like on my 3A.

There has been much discussion about the poor quality of the parts from Kaiser Willys in both the CJ2 and CJ3 sites. It surprises me that anyone still buys parts from them. I use their site to search for parts because they have a good layout of parts and part exploded views. I buy parts from Walcks for the most part.

I bought a set from Walck's for the CJ-5, and for the 3A I went to a local shop that makes hydraulic hoses and brake lines, I showed them the old ones and they made a set...they asked how many PSI would be in the lines and I think I told them 80 psi....

So far so good on both sets....

I'll be the guy to stick up for KW a bit here and say I've had very good luck with their parts. In fact, I've had more junk from Walck's of the blatantly-non-fitting-this-is-obviously-the-wrong-part kind of stuff.

I think both suppliers have their work cut out for them keeping the shelves stocked from a variety of vendors whose contract manufacturers are no doubt continually changing. I'm sure they often both carry less-than-top-quality parts in order to at least have something to sell. It doesn't justify keeping known bad parts in stock without addressing it but I have certainly seen Walck's do this. And I'm not trashing Walck's - I am very happy with them overall. But there have definitely been a couple very annoying quality related issues that still have not been addressed.

There's truth in your statement Ryan. Our parts suppliers are subject to the parts makers and they have a hard time picking the most quality parts to sell to the users. The real problem comes with not warrantying what they sell regardless of the quality. That in it's self is an issue. They buy parts they assume are good but are not. Now when the parts start coming back or calls come in what are they to do? If they give money back they lose money, if they refuse to pay back they lose customers and get ill will. Can they return the remaining stock for credit to their supplier, probably not because the supplier knew the parts were defective when they sold them.

Buyer beware on both the end user and the middle man supplier. The fact is we have to make everyone aware of issues with parts and the suppliers.

Just to add a little to this thread. I have had problems with parts purchased from both KW and Walcks and both have stood behind and sent me replacement parts or given me in store credit, no questions asked.

Truth in all the above statements.
All the parts vendors have a tough job. They are at the mercy of their suppliers, some of whom are less than great.
I know Carl tries to source American as much as he can. Don't know about KW.

The main difference I've experienced is depth of knowledge. I've called KW and not gotten intelligent life at the other end of the phone. In fact I've sent them corrected information on more than one occasion, which in one case they haven't bothered to include in their catalog listing. Go figure.

Carl, on the other hand, has always given me what has turned out to be correct info. He may not be perfect, but I've had much better luck talking to him rather than to KW. Talking to Carl is like talking to Herm the Overdrive Guy. He knows whereof he speaks.
