Front hub: What am I missing?
« on: July 21, 2014, 11:25:16 PM »
It's been over year since I tore apart the jeep, and perhaps I didn't take enough pictures/notes.  And to make matters worse I took apart two sets of axles at the same time, and they're different.

The Dana 25 that was on the Jeep, and will stay on it, had Rzeppa joints.  There is a threaded end on the axle (with a hole, implying it could take a castellated nut) and no slot for a snap ring.  The Dana 27 that was my extra had a Spicer joint, with a snap ring.

I have the snap rings for the 27--they are in the baggies with the other parts from the hubs.  What I don't seem to have is any nut for the 25.  I don't have any shims for either (nor do I remember removing any).

I'm presuming there were nuts on the 25, weren't there?  What about shims?  Since I can't find either, how do I replace them?

BTW, if makes any difference, I've got AVM locking hubs.  (And the 27 had a set of IH hubs, which appear to be identical to the AVM hubs.)

Thanks,

-Paul

The D25 just has a castle nut with a cotter pin. On my axles, I bring the nut up hand tight and back off to the appropriate slot to line up for the cotter pin. Personally, I would use the D27 axle shafts in the D25 because they are much better. I have two sets that I've been meaning to put in my 2 D25s.

I couldn't find that nut on Walck's.  Any suggestion on where to look?  Perhaps I had the name wrong.  ('Cause I sure couldn't find them in my parts baggies!  But I'll look again.  I found the nuts off a D44, but they're too big.)

Why do you prefer the Spicer to the Rzeppa?  The Rzeppa is CV while the Spicer is not.  Or is there something else different about the 25 vs 27 shafts?

I've had the old style pop apart when going down the road and it isn't very fun when that happens... The D27 ones are a bit stronger too.

Finally back at the Jeep...

I searched my parts baggies and can't find any axle nuts for the D25.  Could the PO have been running without them?  I was pretty careful about bagging everything from the axles together, so I can't believe I lost both of these nuts and nothing else!

I'm seriously considering installing the Spicer axles--I had wanted to keep things closer to original.  (And I do have the C-clips that hold those in place!) Are the splines on the differential end of the shaft the same?  It would suck to disassemble the knuckles (again) and find the splines are different...

Nope, they slide right in.

Paul,

I have had this same conversation a few years back. You aren't finding a nut for the end of your 25, because there wasn't one on it. It is not required with certain locking hubs. There was an old hub instruction sheet that said you could, or should cut the threaded part of the axle off for fitment reasons. I can't find that sheet now. I think I saw it at the 503 web site.

I have Warn hubs on both '49 3As. Both are the old school axles. Neither have nuts. Both perform flawlessly. Both are a Warn hub design that are long, and allowed the POs to leave the threads on. There is no room inside the hub for nuts.

Hope this puts your mind at ease.

Tim
