Well, not really. There is something up with the rear axle in the Jalopy. It is a D41 and the spiders are welded. The past couple of times I drove it, it just would not go through the easiest stuff. Today, I had a passenger and I had him watch the rear tire on his side. It wasn't spinning.

I'm hoping it is just the outer key and not something internal. I know what snapped shaft feels like and I never felt that or anything. I'll pop it apart tomorrow and have a look see.

Ok guys, I reeeeally need your help. The outer key isn't broken. It is something internal. Now the question is, should I fix this axle (I have spares) or should I swap it out is a D44? I also know the location of a flanged D44, but that has 4.88s and I want to keep the 5.38s. The catch is, swapping it isn't that easy. I have a bunch of stuff welded to rear for the coil spring suspension. It would be a PITA to cut it off and reattach.

To me it looks like you would want to save the axle tube and diff casting and swap out the internals...

Unless you think you could improve on your coil suspension....

I really do not feel like cutting all that stuff off. The D41 did last an awful long time behind the V6.

I'm not sure if the axle snapped or the splines just twisted off the end. The past few times I used it, it felt like there was no traction in the rear. Never occurred to me that something was wrong. It is the passenger side. Never heard or felt anything unusual. That is why I'm leaning more toward the twisted off splines at this point.

Well, there's yer problem!



I had to take it completely apart to get the broken piece out...  >:(



It was so deformed that I had to weld a bolt to it and pull it out with the slide hammer. I had to stand on the ring gear too! I'm going to replace both axles, outer bearings, races and outer seals. The other side isn't looking too hot.

Should I order replacements from Walcks or is there a place that has better shafts? I'm thinking there isn't much call for better axles shafts for a D41.

I have a parts D41. I could rob the axles out of it. I'm wondering if the new ones might have a better composition than the originals?

Nate, just thinking, I thought D41 and D44 axle shafts were the same?

Man, I've got extra D25 shafts, don't have any extra rear shafts or I'd send you one.

I have a parts D41.  ;) I was unsure if I should buy new because the new axle shafts might be better? I'm going to use my parts one and put the money towards fun stuff like engines...  :D

I got it back together and the consensus is, I'm glad it went boom. Both rear outer bearings and races were shot and the other side's splines were twisted and that side also had the original outer seal too! Now, it should be good for many moons before it breaks again.

I used to not be a fan of the D41, but it really isn't that bad of an axle. I will say, the outer bearing retainers between the brake backing plate and tube is a far better design than the GM axles with the clips in the carrier. It saved me from having the wheel and axle fly out unlike my friend's blazer!  ;D
