Motor Seal

I did ask the question to Walcks and waiting an answer.
But I want also your valuable feedback.

So here the question:
Here is a picture of the hole on the front motor mounting plate. The seal of the crankshaft cover plate will touch it like 1/8 inch. I was wondering if there was any pieces of rubber that should goes in that hole. The hole is to give space for the vaccum pump mounted on the gas pump. In the Jeep CJ rebuilder's manual 1946-1971, It's look like there is a piece of rubber...but I'm not sure. It's a CJ5 also.

Also, Here is a picture of the round rubber seal. We can see that I'm missing one of the round rubber seal. The lower one in the picture.
Do I need to remove any pieces to put the new ones in place?
Or does it with goes to the hole without removing anything else? Of course I will replace both.
I did ordered one from Walcks.

Hey,

I'll take a stab at the second question.  When I rebuilt my engine, I had everything stripped out.  I would remove that main cap and clean it as well as you can to remove any pieces of the old seals.  Then put it back on and put a dab of silicon on the end of the round rubber seal you insert into the main bearing cap.  When I did mine I had to shorten the rubber seal so the oil pan would fit properly.  I dont know if that's a common problem or not.  If you have more pictures of the first issue that may help.

That same square opening was on my engine when I overhauled it. I just made sure I had a good covering of RTV on the narrow spot that will seal on the gasket. Not a heavy coat mind you, just a good film to be sure it seals. It has not leaked there.

As to the round seals at the rear main, I too would pull the main cap, clean the surfaces and the holes, put a thin film of RTV on the sides and bottom of the cap toward the inside of the crankcase and install it and torque it. Then put a film of RTV on the two round plugs and work them in and out of the holes to spread the sealant around. Push them down all the way into the holes and trim them leaving 1/8" to 3/16" sticking up and quickly put the pan on. If you don't get the pan on within a few minutes the RTV will set up and the plugs may not compress into the holes.

Here is my opinion of the round plug seals. If I build another engine I will not use them. I will just seal the bottom and sides of the main cap and install and torque it. I firmly believe the RTV sealant will stop any oil from getting past the main cap. Be careful to use a very thin coat of sealant on the bottom surface of the cap so as to NOT increase the bearing clearance.

Thanks. I was reluctant to use RTV on the cork seal.
Walck's answered me the same thing, "use RTV".

So I will use RTV on the crankshaft cover seal just near the hole on the motor mounting plate.

My first though was to fill the two hole with RTV at the beginning but Walck's strongly suggest to use the round plugs.
The plugs are on their way so I will install them and put RTV.

On page 126 picture 202 of the Jeep CJ rebuilder manual 1946-1971, it seem that there is a rubber in the square hole in the motor mounting plate...Hum?
And he is using RTV everywhere...So I will do like everybody!
