Crank pulley nut /HELP
« on: September 12, 2012, 10:24:46 PM »
I need to replace the crank pulley & nut. Ive soaked the nut with pb-blaster for a couple of weeks. So today I put her in gear & put a tire tool through the rear universal and wedged it under the frame to keep the drive shaft from turning & used a 1/2 in. drive 3/4 socket and while turning the nut managed to bend the tire tool almost 45 degrees without breaking the nut free ???? Im kinda hesitant to heat the nut in fear of damaging the crank ( may heat it a little and try the candle wax trick)      Also am considering an air impact wrench ?
I have a new nut from walks and it appears to be right hand thread so  :o
Any suggestions are appreciated

If your using an acy/oxy torch use a small tip with a hot flame and get it red hot in one spot and quickly get the impact wrench on it and it should come off.

X2 on Carl's comment.  You might try the impact wrench before heating the nut if you're concerned about the crank.....although as long as you keep the heat contained you should be okay.  Most time, the sudden jarring of an impact will accomplish what brute strength alone cannot.  If you don't have a good impact (air or electric) pick one up as it will save you a lot of headaches later on.  Also, don't make the mistake I did in my younger years........buy good quality, name brand impact sockets.  Even if you don't think you will use them much, the cheaper ones are made with cheaper steel and will strip out quickly.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for the replys !!!!
;) I removed it yesterday after heating it with my mapp gas torch. I put a candle to the end of the bolt & let it draw the wax by capilary action into the threads then put the socket on and fowled the drive shaft ;D Struck the ratchet handle [also using a cheater bar] twice with a dead blow hammer and it came right loose.
Heated it a little & wiped the wax from the threads put the new pulley on & tightened her up!  8-)
      Thanks Again !

Looks like tomorrow I pull my crank pulley.

Was there any concern about rotating the engine backwards while trying the get the nut off?

The only concern was that if it went backwards the nut may not come loose  that is all
