Best  / Tailgate stencil
« on: August 14, 2012, 04:28:55 AM »
Got my tailgate back from the paint shop & the stencil job on the tailgate looks awful !
Was told the stencil didnt fit good  :o
I would have done a better job myself . I would not have used an ill fitting stencil !
I am going to get him to repaint the tailgate and stencil it myself /I should have did that in the first place !! :'(
Who makes the best stencil ??????????? Thanks in advance for replys  !

Get a sign painter.  They do very good jobs.

Which tailgate, original or repro?
Whose stencil did you use?

I second the sign painter thought.

Just my 2 cents...I bought stencils from Beachwood Canvas and attempted to paint myself.  I could not for the life of me avoid the fuzzy edge.  Luckily I realized my struggle early on so could wipe off the paint before it dried, so no harm done.  If I were to take this on again, I would definitely go the sign painter route.  That said, I know there are folks here that have done it successfully.

Here's what I'm doing. I bought a stencil from Kaiser Willys. I'm tracing the outline out on a new piece of clean white paper and scanning it in on my printer. My wife has a Boss Kut CnC cutter for her scrap booking projects and I bought a roll of black stick on vinyl transfer. I'll have her cut out the Willys logo on this and now I have the original logo to apply to my Willys. I figure it will last for around three years or so before I have to replace them but that's not too bad. I'll let you know how it works out when done. I'm not ready to apply them yet as the willys isn't painted. If it works, I may be able to help out my fellow members if you want.

This may be a mute point by now, but I did find this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Correct-Willys-Jeep-tailgate-4-WHEEL-DRIVE-masking-paint-stencil-CJ2A-CJ3A-CJ3B-/190675092658

www.MilitaryStencils.com uses this paint mask stencil material. I used their stencil set on my Willys and I couldn't be happier.

As I was doing my detailing after paint I order a set of stencils. Looking at them I knew I would never be able to used them to make the clean lines I was after. I purchased Fine Line tapes of different widths as needed to construct the WILLYS and I was lucky enough to find a "peel of-stick on" decal on eBay for the tail gate 4 Wheel Drive application. Seller was Antoine554. I'm unable to find that seller now. Both turned out nicely.

I have found this location that looks to have the same product: http://www.pixeldecals.com/shop/Willys-CJ-4-Wheel-Drive-Tailgate-Stencil
