Rust on compression surfaces of my head

A quick version of the history of my motor is as follows: �In 1990 Kid broke Dad's engine, so twaching the kid a lesson on life involved the kid having to buy dad another engine and get it rebuilt. �That's where I stepped in, my project came with a new engine strapped to a pallet sitting in the back of the jeep.

Something had always told me to pop the head and look for rust. �I expected to see rust on the cylinder walls but never the head.

Any thoughts on what I should and or shouldn't do next? �Also since I took the head off and it's sat for so long chould I replace the gasket when I resolve this issue?

I suspect the intake valves on the rusted cylinders were open and moisture got in. I would not worry about it, just clean it up with a wire brush and use a new Victor 1023K head gasket and a spray can of Copper Coat. Spray both sides of the gasket and install gasket and head and torque the nuts to 60-70 ft lbs. Install the engine and have fun.

I agree with Carl.  As long as there is not any pitting (and it doesn't look like it your photo), I would give it a good cleaning and install it.  Make sure you use the proper torque pattern...

Yes, and remove the studs and seal them with #2 permatex.

The Permatex #2 stays soft and seals the threads on the studs. The holes for the studs go all the way into the water jacket and water will seep out if not sealed.

When you put the studs in snug them down but don't get carried away, just good and snug. I plan to use antiseize on the head bolt nuts so I can get them off if needed. If you do that use the 60 ft lb rather than 70 ft lb.

I did not realize the threads go into the water passage. �It makes perfectly good sense to me now. �I�ve been using permatex #2 for years, mostly for sealing oil from leaking around threads.

While we're talking permatex #2 , would it also work for putting a seal on the transmission and transfer case drain and fill plugs?

John,

I did it on the drain and fill plugs on the TC and transmission.  No leaks at the plugs..  Unfortunately, I didn't use it on all the other threads...like the gear oil pan, etc...

I was so worried about getting a good seal at the gasket and pan edge, I didn't think about threads here.  If you haven't filled your gear oil yet, do yourself a favor...put the P #2 on every thread that is drilled clean through the TC and Transmission cases.
