Engine Swap
« on: April 05, 2011, 10:47:31 AM »
I have recently bought a 3A in a box. I am short the engine and have been looking for a replacement. What is everybody's thought on putting a 4.3 Chev in its place attached to the T-90? I also have an M-38 artic top that I would like to get rid of. :)

Consider the strength of the tranny, transfer case and rear ends as to what engine to use. Also, consider how fast you want to drive an unstable Jeep at high speed. Think about why you want to stuff a large engine in the Jeep.

I would consider using a 4 cyl Pinto engine before a V6. My first choice is the original Go Devil engine they came with.

The only changes is the engine which will remain stock and adding the rack and pinion so hopefully it will drive better.

I have a Chev V6 with a Saginaw steering swap.
It looks very original from the outside, but when you open the hood you can see the change.
If you are going to upgrade to the V6 I would also upgrade to 11 inch brakes, and a dual reservoir master cylinder, I would also consider front disks, but this would change the look.

I also have all stock tranny transfer case, and diffs. all rebuilt and they work fine for my requirements.

In the 1960's I knew a person that put a Chevy 283 in a CJ3A. He could burn rubber with all four wheels until he finally destroyed the tranny and transfer case. It was cheap to replace them back then.

Go for it.

I just looked at a M38 the other day that had a 327 chevy in it with a Muncie 4 speed transmission.  They took out the front axle and replaced it with an open knuckle, must have been from a cj5.  they also cutout the cross member that sits under the radiator and put in a new reinforcing member at the front bumper.  I think that was for radiator clearance.  All in all it was a sweet modification, had 14 inch wide mudders all the way around and lots of giddy up.  I believe the steering gear was changed as well. Looks like a lot of fun. ;)
